Visuals leave more of an impact on the mind than just reading or listening to words spoken by someone. This is the reason images and videos are more successful at advertising than text. Many modern advertisements are extremely sexualized and provocative. Many advertisers have taken the approach of “Sex sells”. Take a recent Victoria’s Secret ad. It features ten women wearing only their underwear and bras. The goal of this ad is to sell their product, but the text refers to the models in the ad instead of the product. Models are being used as objects is because the emphasis that modern society places on your body figure. Everything is about looking better and advertisers know that if they can lure viewers in with false promises, their products will sell. They say things such as “The Perfect Body” in big bold letters. It is common sense that if you buy this bra you will not magically have the body of a model, but people tend to believe it. The advertisement is appealing to your emotional side by making you think you will look better if you buy this product, and if you don’t you will be looked down upon.

A recent study done by the Dove self-esteem project reveals that 47 percent of girl’s ages 11 through 14 refuse to take part in activities that will show off arts of their bodies in any way (Ospina). This is attributed to the fact that they compare their bodies to the women that are in these ads with impossibly think bodies. If you look at the second image, you will instantly see that there is nothing about their bodies that is impossible to achieve. They are all fully clothed and are not rail thin like that women in the first image. Due to these outrageous ads being released, depression, eating disorders, and negative body image have all increased in prevalence among teenage girls. Advertisements that were released in the past did not cause young girls to see themselves as unattractive or overweight because the ads were not as sexualized like they are now.
