Throughout the history of the United States, immigration has played a major role in affecting the current of New York. With that being said, immigration has helped to shape economics, politics, and social life. Many immigrants came to our nation looking for opportunities that were not provided for them in their homeland. With this motivation in mind, immigrants have developed their own ‘American Dream’ that would come true once they come to America. The common ‘American Dream’ that every immigrant had was to have a good job and a house of their own. Overall, immigration has kept New York alive and growing as well as giving it the label of the ‘City that never sleeps’.

From a person who grew up almost her entire life in New Jersey, coming to New York for college was very different. To me, New York was unique and different from what I was used to back home. Nothing really stops; in other words, everyone constantly keeps on moving from one place to another. I took the subway for the first time and saw a number of people get on those trains to get to the places they had to go. I was so used to getting to places by car and seeing people in New York get to places was very cool. I could connect to my exploration of New York to Graham’s discoveries when he says, “It was two o’clock, and New York here was very much alive” (p. 488). Even at two o’clock in the night, there would always be people walking outside or cars passing by on the streets. In New Jersey, everyone is sleeping at this hour and you could not even spot a light on the streets. It was calm and quiet. To me, it seems as if people enjoyed most of their life at night from parties to sightseeing. To sum up, coming to New York for college was the most amazing experience I have ever received because I was able to understand the true meaning of being a New
