Immigration, having a great influence in America, has torn through the country and has sparked heated debates and turning one against another in the battle of how to tackle the United States’ policy. The United States and Mexico border battle has been going on for decades, illegal immigration being the main issue. Having people flee from their homes in Mexico because of violence and drug cartel influence. With the drug cartels putting racial stereotypes, there is immigrant discrimination. Immigrant discrimination of Mexicans is reminiscent of discrimination against blacks in the sixties. Sometimes it’s the other way around, where the parents send the children to America and then try to get back with their child or children. The mother was trying to flee to America and go see her child. On her third try of going across the New Mexico desert, she died of heat exhaustion and never got to see her child again (Dudley 71-72). The “papers please” part of the bill was mostly the main controversy, giving police officers the right to ask for the person’s legal status (Serrano). This part is extremely used to target Latinos. When tried in a court for its constitutionality, but this part of the bill was not found unconstitutional (Serrano). “The court was very clear that it was a yellow light-proceed with caution because of the high risk of discriminatory treatment” (Serrano). Immigration has always been a hot topic in America. There are many pros and cons, which makes it a delicate issue when it comes to debates. In an attempt to reform immigration, President Obama has issued an executive order that will overhaul the nation’s immigration system as we know it. The president’s changes will affect nearly 11 million undocumented immigrants who are currently residing in America. Focusing on 4 main changes, Obamas’ plan focuses on many aspects from enhancing border security to developing new processes in which workers can enter the country.
America is said to be the land of opportunities, freedom and equality for all. People began migrating to America since over 70 years ago in search of a better life. In earlier times Europeans migrated to the New World/America with the desire of making something better of themselves. Some people migrated to obtain land, and some migrated for an opportunity to live a more prosperous life. In the last ten years immigration to American has been composed of mainly Mexican immigrants. Many people for decades have seen America as a wonderful country that offers everything one needs. Since American is perceived as such utopia those people suffering of poverty, corruption, and/or violence in their country have a desire to move to America and establish a new life here. The United States (USA) today is composed of over 11 million illegal immigrants from all over the world, but mainly Mexico.

To legalize or not to legalize, that is the question? The perception of immigration has become a crucial debate amongst anti and pro immigration groups. However, illegal immigration is a growing concern in the U.S., with an increasing population of over 11 million as of 2012 (What are the solutions to illegal immigration in America?, n.d.). Immigrants may not know it, but they do pose both positive and negative influences on American citizens.
Some would say, quotes John F. Kennedy, “Everywhere immigrants have enriched and strengthened the fabric of American life.” Thus, in today’s society, we can say that immigrants are what made America possible—economically and socially. We are in a melting pot era where the impossible was made possible. From the time John F. Kennedy was elected in 1960, making a promise to change the national origins system to unite the nations of all countries equally. Hence, in 1965, under Lyndon Johnson’s administration, Kennedy’s promise came into light, amending the INS—favoring unification of families, not national origins. Although, the unification was made possible, the peacefulness never lasted.
With little to no money and tuition costs being outrageous, how can we expect unauthorized immigrants whose parents can’t even afford to pay, be expected to make such a payment without any support from the government like everyone else? According to Andrew Thangasamy a professor at Metropolitan State University claims that “For teens without documentation, cost barriers included ineligibility to apply for most grants, loans, and/or scholarships for higher education through either government or private sources”. Undocumented immigrants arrive here for a better life, and endure the harsh reality that when coming here, they face extreme barriers and discrimination as they aren’t treated like everyone else in the face of the government. Today most of its occupants are able to call themselves natives to this land because oftheir once immigrant ancestors. Aside from Native Americans, who were aboriginal to this land, we are all descendants of people from other lands who came to this marvelous country for a better life and new beginning.Some individuals might argue that America should have an open door policy when it comes to immigration. Theconcept that anyone should be entitled to the American Dream, as its original settlers were, is one that has become increasingly controversial. Although it would be a beautifuladdition to the melting pot that this country has become, the pressing question is if America can still offer this dream to its citizens, let alone the overwhelming number of legal and illegal immigrants entering the country.
Illegal immigration was an issue in the past and is a pressing problem in the present. The U.S. Government has been trying to find a resolution to this issue for years. The United States approved the Immigration Reform and Control Act in 1986, which allowed the American Government to punish American companies that consciously employed illegal immigrants (Nadadur 1037-1052). The United States’ Government Immigration Reform and Control Act has been unsuccessful in controlling illegal immigration. It is estimated that illegal immigration into the U.S. has a yearly interval of three hundred fifty thousand people (Rousmaniere 24-25). It is apparent that the 1986 act was not able to keep a handle on illegal immigration. Illegal immigration continues due to the fact that immigrants only take the jobs available to them, which in turn helps support the United States’ economy, so measures should not be taken to halt immigration.

In the past history of America there has been a major debate on what immigration policy should be in the United States. Fear and hatred of the unknown has greatly increased in America today. This unknown is a different race of people than the common caucasian in America. This has led to racism of others especially immigrants.
