The Image of Nursing The purpose of this paper is to show how in today’s society, nurses struggle to get positive professional recognition, despite attempts to change the image of nursing in society on public platforms. Data sources used on the image of nursing were identified through the CINAHL, Google Scholar, YouTube and Proquest databases from 2005-2015. The search term was image of nurs*, these articles were peer reviewed. The image of nursing in the media is predominately negative and does not match the reality of what professional nursing is. In the 2016 Miss America pageant that aired on September 13th 2015, Kelley Johnson, a 22 year old nurse from Colorado gave an inspiring monologue about the true meaning of what it is to be …show more content…
This relates to the example demonstrated by Kelley Johnson because even though she used the media to promote a positive image of nursing, she was still not given proper recognition by the hosts of The View instead she received criticism. Nursing theory and education defines nursing as its own specific career, but it is stereotypical that nurses have no scope of practice but rather to just follow orders (Hoeve et al., 2014). This relates to Johnson because she talked about how she acted within her scope of practice to change a patient’s life, and that her therapeutic communication and genuine caring was not a doctor’s order, but part of her skill set and …show more content…
It is important for nurses, as well as nursing students and educators to promote nursing in the public and engage the public in the image of their profession (Weaver et al., 2013). The media is a huge tool that can captivate a multitude of people, and by putting nursing in the media often and working with it to build a strong public support, as well as using TV shows and advertisements, nursing can be positively and accurately addressed (Weaver et al., 2013). Nurses must continue to speak to the media about the work nurses do and encourage them to promote a full range of nursing, and challenging misconceptions (Ontario Nurses’ Association [ONA], 2013). Nursing students can show the public that they are professional by dressing in an appropriate manor, and doing their job with confidence and accuracy. Nursing students can present a positive personal image in their daily lives. They can do this by eating healthy, exercising, living smoking free, and practicing what they promote to the public. Nurses need to continue to promote nursing as an attractive career, as well as publicize what they do to gain respect for the profession, and promote it to future generations (ONA, 2013). Things like “the sexy nurse”, as well as gender and race stereotypes do not reflect the modern model of nursing and this
Presented issues such as lack of nursing opportunities for nursing graduates, lack of respect for the nursing profession and nurses being viewed as a threat by doctors continues to be of an existence today. As a nurse, I feel that it is of high importance to highlight these presented issues from the film not only because they were the most outstanding to me but because the nursing profession needs more
Nursing’s development from an occupation to a profession follows the devotion and sacrifice of many amazing women throughout history. Considered to be one of the oldest professions, women have performed what could be considered nursing duties since the beginning of time. Although there have been many events and many individuals who have contributed to nursing’s evolution from the occupation it was once considered to the profession that now exists, the development of formal education opportunities and scholarly resources and the women who created them is what fascinates me most. Without knowing, each of the following five women helped lay the groundwork for what Lucie Kelly, RN, PhD, FAAN, eventually termed the eight characteristics of a profession
Angelou once said, “The people may forget the nurses name, but they will never forget how that nurse made them feel.” Nursing is a profession. Unfortunately, nursing does not always get the credit it deserves because of these stereotypes. Nursing is not a gay profession for males. Due to the shortage of nurses, our society needs more nurses now than never. Nurses make a difference in almost every person’s lives just not in hospital rooms but also in schools and clinics. Nursing in not easy job but somebody has to do it. There has to those individuals who must take on this challenge and be the difference in someone’s life. People could not care if someone considers them a failure for being a nurse and not a doctor. Most doctors could not do their job effectively without the help and assistance of nurses. The money is there for those who think nurses does not get paid that much. Healthcare is one of the biggest factors in our world, and for our world to progress further, an increase in employment for nursing is necessary. These stereotypes should not and will not stop the field of nursing from
Once upon a time, my best friend, Bryan Martinez, often heard his mother’s medical conversations with friends. One day at school, our teacher confronted Mrs. Martinez and told her that she was able tell that Bryan was a son from a nurse. Apparently there was an incident at school where a little boy was acting out and Bryan told our teacher that the little boy was agitated, and to give him some medication to calm him down. As demonstrated by Bryan, nursing is ongoing profession that promotes the health and well-being of individuals.
Nursing is much like a tapestry, though equally an art and science, it is a profession of the heart. Nurses embark on individualized journeys. Nurses create unique story maps, that help define the nursing profession. A collection of “stitches” that form a complex masterpiece, created through daily acts of a nurse’s empathy, kindness and compassion. The beneficent acts of nursing become intertwined with theoretical science, critical thinking, knowledge and skill. A combination of art and science that forms our ever-expanding, professional scope of practice and future nursing roles. Nursing is like a tapestry that is best defined when collective consideration of the profession is applied, a vast collection of beauty, precision, richness, depth
The American Nurses Association (ANA) developed a foundation for which all nurses are expected to perform their basic duties in order to meet the needs of the society we serve. The ANA “has long been instrumental in the development of three foundational documents for professional nursing; its code of ethics, its scope and standards of practice, ands statement of social policy.” (ANA, 2010, p. 87) The ANA defined nursing as “the protection, promotion, and optimization of health and abilities, prevention of illness and injury, alleviation of suffering through the diagnosis and treatment of human response, and advocacy in the care of individuals, families, communities, and populations” and used to create the scope and standards of nursing practice. (ANA, 2010, p. 1) These “outline the steps that nurses must take to meet client healthcare needs.” () The nursing process, for example, is one of the things I use daily. Other examples include communicating and collaborating with my patient, their families, and my peers, and being a lifelong learner. I continually research new diagnoses, medications, and treatments for my patients. As a nurse of ...
Nursing is a field of work that so many people find themselves fascinated with, as well as harboring a degree of respect. We look to nurses with a sense of admiration and reverence, and look to them for security in times of need. What makes nursing such a desirable and enthralling field to other people? Despite the fact that doctors are normally under the spotlight, nursing is of profound importance in American culture. Nurses provide comfort and security, as well as a knowledge of medical aid. The field of nursing has the benefit of coming from a field that is ancient, yet timeless and has blossomed throughout history to make a large impact on our culture today.
In-class discussions focused in on these various images of nursing and their damaging consequences. I have observed that I am not as assertive as I should be to dispute these negative images of nursing. I need to recognize when individuals make comments insinuating a negative portrayal of nurses. I will then proceed to educate these individuals on their uninformed views by demonstrating an understanding of my role as a nurse. This step will require knowledge and confidence; which I hope to acquire by the following strategies outlined in my knowledge confidence
The prolonged shortage of skilled nursing personnel has been a serious concern to the healthcare industry, and this shortage has impacted the quality of care delivery. In addition, nursing turnover has also exacerbated the problem of nursing shortage. Nursing shortage has been blamed on many nurses retiring and less younger nurses joining the occupation. There is also an increase in life expectancy (baby boomers) leading an increase in both physical and mental ailment with subsequent demand in nursing care. Nurses are also leaving nursing profession because of inadequate staffing, tense work environment, negative press about the profession, and inflexible work schedules. Even though nursing is a promising career and offers job security, the
McCurry et all (2009/2010)??** state ‘Nursing as a profession has a social mandate to contribute to the good of society through knowledge-based practice.’ Acknowledging this statement and in recognition of the challenges faced in today’s healthcare system it is imperative that nurses know who they are as a profession. Without an explicit understanding of our identity as nurses and our role in society we have no worth or purpose other than to aid and promote the medical discipline (Newman et al., 2008).
The American Nursing Association defines nursing as ““protection, promotion, and abilities, prevention of illness and injury, alleviation of suffering through the diagnosis and treatment of human response, and advocacy in the care of individuals, families, communities, and populations” (American Nurse Association, 2011, p. 7). There is so much more to nursing as a whole moreover throughout this paper I will be examining my own personal nursing philosophy, which is what I believe is the core characteristics of nursing, the approach of my nursing philosophy, along with my belief and value system of caring, compassion, advocacy, respect, honesty and integrity. I will be discussing my choice of becoming a nurse, what
Image and profession go hand in hand. Image plays a very important yet controversial role in the nursing profession. The image of nursing is often inaccurate and falls short of the fair and correct portrayal of what the role of nursing truly is (Summers, 2010). With an inaccurate portrayal of what nursing really is comes the challenges of the profession. Popular stereotypes in nursing coming from both the past and today media and expectations take away the true meaning and role of the modern profession. Some common stereotypes include but are not limited to: unskilled, a way to marriage, and a physician’s helpmate. These stereotypes lead to many problems within the nursing profession including poor working conditions, insufficient support
The career i chose is a branch of the medical field. I chose a career in nursing, more specifically the career path of a registered nurse. This career consists of providing care for people of all ages and helping them with managing their conditions. I chose this career because my mother is an rn and my family has a strong presence in the medical field. It is important to understand the education or training requirements, skills, or talents needed, salary, benefits offered, and the duties for a particular career when making this decision.
Some of the most gratifying things about being a nurse is the distinctive role we have with those we care for. Our role encourages openness and transparency for clients and their families to reveal things to us they may not be willing to say under most circumstances. Furthermore, nursing is a life path that comes with incalculable responsibilities to be both a compassionate health care provider and a conscientious advocate. This semester I had the opportunity to experience nursing from the perspective of a Community Health Nurse in Montclair, California. It has given me a chance to practice these responsibilities in different ways. It has also given me a new perspective on nursing.
Three years ago I came to this great country following a goal, a dream, and looking for new opportunities. I never thought that today I would be studying nursing. Honestly, these ideas never crossed my mind after having been a doctor for 20 years in Cuba. Being an immigrant brings overcome barriers where there is no time for fears and doubts, which only have to pursue a particular aim for which to fight relentlessly. Few times we find good opportunities to study, and this one, in particular, I would not lose it. Studying nursing for me would be like starting over, although not entirely, this would allow me to get closer to what I 've always liked, patient care. Simultaneously, it filled me with many questions: Classes in a foreign language would allow me to interact with teachers and at the same time learn from them? How lessons would be taught in the college courses? How would be the interaction with the classmates?
