Illustration, as a genre of art, has repeatedly refused to be confined within various art categories. Some would rather group it with fine art, the traditional mediums of graphite or ink lending it the presence of the artist’s hand, and others associate illustration with design, perhaps for its relationship to text and its educational character. The complexity of trying to define illustration means that illustration is at times accepted and at times rejected within these categories of fine art or design. In its refusal to be pinned down, perhaps illustration can be used to question and push the boundaries of how we define and value art. As someone currently majoring in illustration, when I tell people my area of interest, I’m often met with questions.
