Genetic and chromosomal abnormalities were the topic of focus for this paper and presentation. A genetic/chromosomal abnormality is when an error occurs in the number of chromosomes or the structure of the chromosomes. These abnormalities lead to physical, as well as mental birth defects. Many times chromosomal abnormalities may lead to a miscarriage or stillbirth.
First and fore most, it is important to understand what and where a “chromosome” is. Chromosomes are tiny string-like structures in cells of the body that contain the genes. Chromosomes are inherited from both the mother and father to the offspring. Normally, every person has 23 pairs of chromosomes, equaling 46 total chromosomes. A baby can be born with either too many or too few chromosomes, which causes abnormalities. A child can also be born with one or more chromosomes that are missing pieces or have been rearranged, therefore causing an abnormality.
Chromosomal abnormalities usually result from an error that occurred when an egg or sperm cell was developing. It is not known why these errors occur. Nothing that a parent does or doesn't do before or during pregnancy can cause a chromosomal abnormality in his or her child. It is speculated that environmental factors play a large role in chromosomal abnormalities. Research reports that these environmental factors include pollution, chemical exposure, and radiation exposure. Errors in chromosomes can cause a wide variety of birth defects being mild to severe.
One common type of chromosomal abnormality is trisomy. In this case an individual will possess three copies of a chromosome, rather than two. Down Syndrome is an example of Trisomy. Those with Down syndrome have three copies of chromosome 21. Children and adul...

...al issue of abortion. Some parents prefer to abort a child who is diagnosed with a chromosomal disorder prior to birth. Injected growth hormones, hormone replacement therapies, and occupational/physical therapies are option that might aid in treating the symptoms and issues associated with chromosomal abnormalities.
Through this project I have discovered some interested facts. I have a better awareness and I can better empathize with these who have chromosomal abnormalities. The parents who have special needs children are very special. I applaud the parents who successfully care for child with disorder like discussed above; it takes a true angel. The research of this project has created an interested for me in chromosomal disorders and abnormalities. I would like to research more in depth and experience more inaction with those who have chromosomal abnormalities.
