If you had met me in high school, you would realize I am not the same person I am today. I used to believe that people do not change, they never will. Growing up I came to believe that it is impossible for people to change. This is not true, after being in college for a short four months, I am a completely different person than I was when I left home which is for the better. Unfortunately, I was arrested the first week of school. Being arrested was an extreme wake up call, and made me realize why I really came to college. There are two different paths people go down in college, first students can party and not care about grades, barely passing their classes. Although I was a different person in high school, it is possible for people to truly change if they put their mind to it. In high school, I really did not care about my grades. My attendance was awful, skipping too many classes to count. I barely managed to pull off a 3.0 GPA by the end of my senior year. When I came to college, I knew grades were important but I did not realize how challenging it was to get above a 3.0 in college. Studying in college for tests is a completely different concept than in high school. Students have to put everything into studying for tests and not just cram 10 minutes before the test, or start writing a paper 3 hours before it is due. Everyone says to have fun in college, and this is the time to have fun but to me, if I work hard now, I can have fun later in life when I have a career and done with school. If I had the chance I would transfer to a different school to get out of the constant partying atmosphere. My father prefers me to stay at Ole Miss and finish my degree here because academically it is a prestigious university. Instead of transferring, I plan on graduating early with doing classes during the summer at home, hopefully graduating within 3 years. Immediately after graduating, I plan on going back home to get my masters at St. Louis University. Many students take their high school years for granted and do not always pull off the best grades. But then when they get to college, or a higher degree of education than high school they start to straighten up. The reason being is because after high school everyone can choose what it is they want to spend the rest of their life doing. The classes they take, are of interest to them rather than all of the required ones in high school. For this reason I feel that students are more likely to take college seriously and not just because of the money.
Yes, good grades do lead to good colleges, which do open doors, and yes, making students have the need to avoid bad grades is good as well. However, despite common belief, good grades are not that important. People like Steve Jobs prove that the label grades give mean nothing. The world has seen glory and success earned by many confident, jubilant people, and some of those very same people did not attend college or have perfect scores. Worrying too much about grades can cause students serious problems like not really understanding the work, make them not feel smart enough and lose interest in school and can cause anxiety and other health issues. I worried so much about failing in college and not being about to fit in. But I am in need of this change to challenge me and prepare me for my future in which I’ll have more bills to pay, other than tuition, and a life on my own, completely free of my parents. College isn’t just a place for learning but also a place to grow personally and experience new things that I wouldn’t have the opportunity to do if I was still a high school student or in other words, a child. During my years in high school, I have learned many valuable lessons. I’m proud of the person I am becoming. Life has not been easy, but thankfully I’m a strong hard worker. While I wish finding my way around the school was my only problem, I was faced with some internal challenges. As the school year started, my friends slowly started to leave to these “big shot” colleges or simply move away to other community colleges. I, too, wanted the complete “college experience” somewhere in Arizona or across the country; yet I felt stuck and unaccomplished. Having a college degree in today’s world is very important because more companies and businesses are requiring that anyone they hire has at least a two-year college degree, which is also known as an Associate 's degree. High school graduates and other people who have had thoughts about going to college should do so because it is getting harder for just a high school graduate to get a job, this is a result of hiring companies and businesses don’t want anyone without a college degree. Grades are one of the most important factors of my high school career. My grade point average and my SAT's determine what college I go to. They determine my effort at high school. I must do whatever possible to keep my grade point average above 3.0. My GPA currently is ok, but if I could increase it by just .2 I would be much better off. Grades are very crucial for getting acceptance to college. They are one of the major things that colleges look at to accept you (or so I have been told). So I will keep pushing myself so that my grades will increase this year, making it possible for me to hopefully enter a better school then I can right now.

In the United States, the student debt is over $1.2 trillion dollars. It is the second largest cause of debt following mortgage debt. When the media spends so much time talking about the limitations of a college education, they are discouraging some students from attending college. Regardless of all the debt, attending college and attaining a higher education is the best decision a student pursuing a bright future, could make today.
First off, the college life has changed me for the better. I am much more responsible in many different ways. I had to change my study habits, or should I say I have to get study habits. I high school I never studied, because everything came so easy to me and I could just do the work and end up with passing grades. When I reached college I tried to do the same thing and it didn’t work. I had to start studying on a daily basis and it was hard to go from not doing any work to studying every night and on the weekends, I wasn’t use to that, but I had to make it a habit or I was not going to make it. Going to school everyday was not a problem because my parents made me go everyday, my major change was my study habits.
Throughout this semester I realized that college is a lot harder than I thought it would be. I developed skills that I believe will help me get through my classes to come. I know I wouldn’t have been able to realize the complexity of college without the help of my Professors. They showed me college isn’t a joke, and that I need to work hard in order to get high grades. This semester was a headache because I was going through the transition from high school to college. I was learning new things and I lacked the traits a college students needs to have in order to do well. I know now that my next semester will defiantly go smoothly, because I now believe I have the traits a college student should contain thanks to my Professors!
“I will be so glad when this semester is over because school is stressing me to the max.” This is a quote that quite a few college students are familiar with and have probably said themselves. College can be a fun but also stressful time for students. They are focused on making sure they attend class and get passing grades so they can be successful and hopefully succeed in the next chapter of their life. Researchers at Columbia University and the University of San Diego conducted a study conducted a study to determine how stress negatively affects academic performance and enrollment. They were surprised by the nearly 25% of students polled in the National College Health Assessment that said they experienced poor grades or dis-enrolled from a class as a result of stress.
