This essay will focus on understanding how the language used to define social policy terms and how both the American ideology and ideology of individualism have negatively shaped the welfare system and its policies. The American ideology, ideology of individualism and language have all contributed to the development of stigmatization of social welfare policies. This is essential in order to understand the effects this stigmatic welfare system has on the wellbeing of certain individuals, families and communities that have received them and continue to receive them today. Defining Social Welfare Policy. Social welfare policy is described to be a set of social services and programs created by the government with the intentions of improving and maintaining the social welfare of its citizens. The social welfare policies that are in within these organizations, are intended to focus on managing social problems, meeting the needs of individuals, families and communities as a whole and as well as creating opportunities in order for people to thrive. The level of opportunities created and the amount of help provided can differ depending on the population that is being served.
