John Paul Jones was born John Paul on 6 July 1747 in Kirkbean, Kirkcudbright, Scotland. In 1761, at the age of thirteen, he took a seven year apprenticeship position in Whitehaven onboard the Friendship, in which he learned seamenship and navigation. After making eight trips on the Friendship, Younger, the owner, had gone bankrupt and released John from the rest of his apprenticeship. Over the next four years John held positions on the slave ships King George, as third mate, and on the Two Friends, as chief mate. After making two trips, in 1768, he left the Two Friends in Kingston, Jamaica and accepted a ride back to Scotland on the brig John. However, during the voyage the captain and the first mate died and by consent of the crew, being the only one that knew how to navigate, John Paul took command safely sailing back to Kirkcudbright. The owners of the John were grateful for his actions and offered John Paul the position of captain on the John; after two years he took command of the Betsey. The First Crusade (1096-1099) was a military expedition initiated by Pope Urban the II to regain the Holy Lands in Jerusalem from the Muslim conquest. The Pope gave a speech requesting military action against Muslim takeover to the French people of Clermont. The speech eventually propagated to other nations for further recruitment. Urban’s political and military involvement helped regain the Holy Lands and save the Christian Crusaders souls. His famous speech changed the course of history in part because its dissemination was overly successful, and assembled over 40,000 Crusaders to do the will of God. Böll experienced both the first and second world wars and the effects that these wars had on German society. Events such as the economic collapse in Germany post WWII, the construction of the Berlin Wall, the rise of student based urban terrorism in West Germany in the 1970’s and the increasing state controls to contain such alleged threats can be seen to influence the issues explored in The Lost Honour of Katharina Blum. The novel is a comment on the press and the law, the labyrinth of social truth, the collision of fact and fiction and the power of language. Böll himself experienced the press first hand and this along with the experiences of Professor Bruckner, form the basis of his criticism directed at the powerful and hegemonic structures in society, in particular in relation to the police and the press and their corrupt relationship in the novella. Many of Heinrich Böll s views and attitudes, resulting form his context, are clearly visible in the novella through the portrayal of certain characters in positive or negative lights. The historical, social, economic and political context of Böll and West Germany at this time (1900’s) had a considerable effect on the issues Böll delves into in The Lost Honour of Katharina Blum and greatly affected my understanding of the novel.
This book left me with a deeper sense of the horrors experienced by the Polish people, especially the Jews and the gypsies, at the hands of the Germans, while illustrating the combination of hope and incredible resilience that kept them going.

After a two year time period in Rome, His Holy Father received his doctorate in theology and returned to Poland. After serving in several parishes and becoming a well-known religious face in Poland, St. John Paul II became the bishop of Ombi. Kimel lived in an “unclean” area called the ghetto, where people were kept away from German civilians. The poet describes and questions himself using repetition and rhetorical questions.
