Ideological Differences among the Parties of Oceania in George Orwell´s 1984

929 Words2 Pages

Life in Oceania is somewhat confusing and tough to follow. When you first start the book 1984 it’s difficult to understand the lives the people live in Oceania. As you travel through the book though you start to understand the people’s lives and how trapped they are. As you read through the book you also start to understand the three different parties in Oceania and how they work. The Inner Party is the high class party with all the luxuries. They’re barely watched over by the telescreens and they pretty much control Oceania. The Outer Party is larger than the Inner Party but they’re watched by the telescreens at all times and are pretty much the working class but somewhat poor and only given what they need to survive. If some Outer Party members are considered too smart or not loyal to Big Brother, they become an unperson. The Proles have the largest amount of people and are not watched by the telescreens at all and they are considered free people with a very low amount of money. This information doesn’t necessarily tell us what the ideological, thematic difference between the parties and what the main thing that makes them different is. The ideological and thematic difference between the parties is that they all have different beliefs in Big Brother, who controls them, and who is the highest power in Oceania. When first analyzing the difference and the parties, you have to first look at the Inner party and what they do. The Inner Party is Big Brother and the Inner Party controls Oceania. This seems a little confusing but after analyzing the information it is pretty obvious that the Inner Party runs the government and that there is no real person named “Big Brother”. The Inner Party is Big Brother while the Proles really do not have to care much for Big Brother but just need to show minor Patriotism. The Outer Party must love, follow, and do everything Big Brother tells them to do. Big Brother is not a real person like Winston, Julia or O’Brien but this idea of Big Brother or government based off this idea of a Big Brother works for the government. Obviously this government is wrong and not right but it does work and allows the party to keep control for a long time. Works Cited Glover, Beaird. "Nineteen Eighty-Four."
