Information Communications Technology systems are used extensively in modern shops and supermarkets. This is because of the rise of mammoth supermarket sweeping the world and so therefore it is no longer possible to keep track of stock and sales with out the help of ICT. Computer systems are used in a variety of ways; • Stock control software • Maintaining constant temperatures in fridges and freezers • Satellite tracking systems to track delivery lorries • CCTV to monitor customers entering and leaving • Electronic weighing machines • Epos systems • Computer network to connect store stock control system to head office Supermarket Hardware Types of Hardware in Supermarkets: • CCTV Cameras • Electronic weighing machines • EPOS Systems • Computers • EFTPOS (Electronic Funds Transfer Point Of Sale) • Automatic Doors Computers There are rooms such as the systems office which contain several computers depending on the size and status of the supermarket. Checkout Computers are linked to the previously mentioned computers and are called the “Branch Computers”. Software such as “Control Systems” and “Stock Control” are used in these computers. They can run software to control the fridges and freezers throughout the store and so have to be extremely accurate as some foods need to be kept at different temperatures.
