The President of our facility is from Nigeria which is primarily an English speaking country. He came to the United States when he was 16 to go to school. The Vice President of our facility is from Italy and has a very strong accent and can be difficult to understand. He came to the United States when he was in his thirties for a better opportunity. The Department Managers have been recruited for the positions and are not from the Wheeling area. The president, vice president, and department heads all have their own unique communication styles. Because I do payroll I have to communicate with each one personally. At first it was a challenge to learn how each individual manager worked. Some managers use email, some direct communication in person, some over the phone, and some it is a challenge to get them to communicate at all. They also communicate to their staff differently. I know which managers will pass information to their employees for me and which managers I need to just attach a note to the employee’s paycheck. I find myself having to be diverse myself to have a functioning work relationship with them.

I have learned over the years as well as working at this company that working in an environment that is diverse can be challenging. We all come from different backgrounds and we need to respect that in each other. There will be times in your life that you will run into someone and you clash with that person. It is important to connect with people as early as possible, “connecting with people makes it easier to control their behavior.” (p50). You can change one’s behavior better if you actually get to know that person, where they are coming from, and what they are going through. It makes it easier to understand their behaviors and why they are acting a certain way. If we fail to connect we won’t have a sincere respect for them.
