It was starting to rain again, my matted fur saturated with wet mud still dripping, and the rain had hardly stopped for an hour. The icy winds manipulated the rain and with a piercing sting each drop brought a pain far beyond discomfort that could not be evaded. I had been confined to a three foot radius by a heavy metal chain, a mound of my own urine and feces accumulated from what seemed like an eternity, this was my bed, my bathroom, and if I was permitted, it was also my food bowl. Sleeping was not feasible, however, my reality was in fact a nightmare, so I pretended to wake up.

I heard the familiar bell like sounds of my name tag jingling as my harness was carried closer to me, as I lifted my head and looked I saw it, my blue leash and harness, the one with red and black ladybugs printed on it, I knew we were going for a walk. My bed was so soft and warm I almost did not want to leave it. I could tell by the rays of the sun shining through the window that it was a beautiful day. The pleasant aroma of springs blooming’s had filled the home. As I took a deep breath in, the stench of my excrement could not be masked, reminding me of my reality and not allowing any relief.

It was completely dark now, and I had dismissed my previous attempt at daydreaming. I knew that the rock that had been flung at me earlier from the back porch was my only human contact for the day. Going without food had become an unbearable recurrence and the rock that had left my snout bleeding was an indisputable relief from the habitual cruelties that I endured daily. Loud crashes of thunder brought glimpses of light and an anxious discomfort, I knew that this night would not offer me any rest.
