“I think the most effective forms of critique are ones that establish a common ground for people to occupy, and then appeal to the best nature of people on that common ground.” - Mohsin Hamid We have all been out shopping or in a restaurant and heard that pop classic, a great oldie, or an unknown song that catches your attention as it plays out over the business’s speaker system. Even while working diligently on a household chore or an assigned essay, you may have a favorite group or station playing on headphones or just in the background. These are all examples of how music has been a mainstay of society and even today continues to surround us in our daily lives and tasks. Since music has infused all of our lives, should a place of business remove this luxury from its employees? While management may have experienced the presence of a radio as a workplace distraction and a source of contention among employees, the benefits of having a radio at work has led to increased employee performance, better focus of tasks and improved morale. The issue of a radio in the …show more content…
To be sure, the ability to find a middle ground in a polarized situation can be a difficult task, but as both sides have the same goals in mind, safety from distractions and a shift in positive morale, steps forward can bring both parties together. I hope that the emphasis on what tasks are made more or less risky through music and how a radio may reduce risk will allow for a policy that denotes a time and a place that is acceptable to all parties. Alongside this reduction of risk; morale and the social stimulation that can be achieved with the use of a radio can help workers maintain performance and not sacrifice productivity for needed social interaction. In order to reduce conflict among peers, discussion and oversight can be key to an understanding of the limits and guidelines set in

Rock n’ Roll is a type of music that came about in the late 50’s. Before that, there was no music that resembled Rock n’ Roll; instead, folk and other genres dominated. Then the Korean War ended. Shortly thereafter, the Vietnam War began, and with it came a new type of music, featuring hateful songs and concerts. The introduction and evolution of rock and roll music from the late 50’s and 60’s made a generation more violent both physically and verbally.
People like to listen to music, but what if that’s all they do? They always have their earphones in, and can never actually have time to socialize with others. When another person see’s someone with earphones, they tend to stay away and not say anything to them, because the other individual feels like they are bothering the person with the earphones in. Not being social can harm someone in the long run, growing up one is going to need to learn how to talk to others, how to work with others. But, how can they do this if they constantly have their earphones in and are not having any interaction with other humans? People need to learn how to socialize and make sure they’re learning these
Music is a creative outlet for emotions, expressions and personal issues. It is also a place to force ideas and opinions on a mass of thousands. People can relate to it on many levels. But the problem of who should be responsible or regulate it exists. Who should decide what is played or sold?
In most recent years, schools have been fighting to keep music programs alive in school systems across the nation. Some schools believe that due to budget factors, music should be cut out of the academic program, to save some money. But what is widely unknown is that schools that have good music programs do better in areas of math and sometimes reading. A high tech music program called Kodaly, was instituted into the schools of Hungary. If a person were to look at the school today, there are “…no third graders who cannot sing on pitch and sing beautifully” (Dickinson, 1993, p.1). Also, the students of the Hungarian schools academic achievement in math and science “ continues to be outstanding” (Dickinson, 1993, p.1). Another report shows that schools that spend 20% to 30% of their day on music (or the arts), have the highest academic achievement (Dickinson, 1993). One study was conducted involving first and second graders at two Rhode Island public elementary schools to show the effects of musical training on academic achievement. In this study, 96 children were used between the ages of 5-7 in eight first grade classrooms. Four of the classrooms were used as control classrooms, which received the standard amount of musical training; forty-five minutes of music that alternates weeks. The other four classrooms were called “test arts“ classrooms. These classrooms received an hour of music per week. After seven months of this training, the students were all given a standardized test. It was then concluded from the tests, that 77% of the “test arts” classes “…were now at grade level or above in mathematics, as compared to 55% of those in the control groups” (MENC, #1). This clearly shows that if ...
There have always been discussions of the effects music has on ones behavior, and how it’s related to Psychology. The truth has never really been verified among common knowledge, but it’s usually something that intrigues people. They say heavy metal and rap can make teenagers violent, sad and depressing music can make teenagers sad and depressed, and some say it’s best to listen to classical music when doing schoolwork because it makes your brain more active. There have been many people that reported how music has effects on their behavior. It can lift their mood, “fuel the fire” when they’re angry, or even make it easier for them to fall asleep. People never really get the chance to research the actual science of music, and how it changes people attitudes.
Music and the relationships of music have changed drastically in our society. The course of studies and the evaluations of the applications of the technology of music, the making and the listening of music have changed in the way we listen to music, the styles of music in our society and in the media. The importance of the technology in music today, has, over the past century been charted through the study of musical examples and through viewing how human values are reflected in this century's timely music. There are very many different types of music that are listened to. There are readings, writings, lectures and discussions on all the different types of music.
Foucault’s definition of critique closely related to Kant’s definition of enlightenment. Foucault states “Critique is the movement by which the subject gives himself the right to question the truth on its effects of power and question power on its discourses of truth” (47). Foucault want to mainly apply critique to what he calls the art of governing or “the movement through which individuals are subjugated in reality of a social practice through mechanism of power that adhere to a truth” (47). Every musical system around the world is a complex cultural phenomenon. The culture underlie a series of concepts which impart the musical system into the other basic cultural activities of the society. It is then defined and conceptualized by the society at large and then ingrained in the cultural phenomena. Thus, in order to fully understand a specific music of a particular culture, we must examine it in its cultural context along its musicological context.
Music production is more than just a musical program; it is a duty that requires personal experience with music and artistic direction. Observing producers in the studio, their creativeness comes out in different ways even depending o their task. The artisanship of music production has come a long way ever since the heavily involved recording equipment has been massively changing. Every artwork has countless of individual people who have changed the way the art may be applied to the field, leaving behind their legacy to influence all aspects of music. Music producers are always overlooked when it comes to working with musicians or bands, but what people do not know is that they are the backbone of the production but are unseen to the public. There are several of paths on becoming a producer, like being self-taught or going to a vocational school. If you plan to advance as a producer, it will be a rough experience trying to ascend to a higher position. A music producer is the main person that manages the whole album on a record, and is responsible for helping the artist complete his work.

Once again, radio is currently at a crucial stance. FM radio was once the means in which someone could find out about new music artists, hear their favorite top songs, and catch up on local/world news. However, with the surge of the Internet at the turn of the century, the role of the radio starts to diminish. The Internet can now be used for gathering local news or weather in a fast and efficient manner. It can also be used as a way for music fans to find new artists similar to ones that they currently like, and (although not legal) ease in the process of downloading complete albums in high-quality formats for free. CD and MP3 players are now very popular for the person “on-the-go,” and as a result, it’s very easy to find people that remark: “I don’t listen to radio.” The reason for this is that radio has lost its niche. No longer is radio as convenient of a means to get news and experience new or popular music. Radio is forced, once again, to innovate itself in order to keep from being eliminating by the more popular types of med...
...individual is critiquing society he should also coordinate his cognitive process with society. Critiquing society involves being able to criticize society enough to want social change. Examining the subjugation in a society allows for society to not reproduce itself. Traditional theory does not address its connection with society therefore does not critique society and continues a cycle of reproducing society as it is. Critique in Critical theory involves observing the disruption and conflict that causes for struggle within a society.
Also, music plays an important role in culture by being entertaining. Let's face it; people listen to music because it's exciting! It can affect a person's thoughts and feelings towards a particular subject, but not ultimately change their mind, which is what makes it so pleasurable. What else would put life in the world if music didn't? Music provides background music for almost everything in a person's everyday life. Try to imagine what television would be like without music. There would be no catchy jingles to stupid commercials that would end up getting stuck in your head for days and no theme songs to your favorite shows. Even a movie without sound would make you not want to watch it. Whether you think so or not, a soundtrack to a movie makes a person emote to the screenplay more- it makes you feel what the actors are feeling. That is what makes it so entertaining! If there were no songs to a movie, you might as well just not watch it at all. And what about a cell phone? How would you know when to pick up your phone if you didn't hear it ring your favorite song? Hearing that ring tone on a phone provides a small source of entertainment, but also serves a very important purpose.
Music has played a role in society since the dawn of man. Said to be the beginning of communication in early civilization, music and dance have influenced how we think, act and treat members of our own society. Song and dance is used in rites of passage ceremonies such as births, weddings and funerals throughout the world. Jamaican and Yoruba cultures have made many contributions to our society. The uses of this music as a vehicle for political issues, values, and beliefs have been used by many musicians from different cultures. I intend to discuss the Contribution of these two contemporary cultures music and their effect on society.
