When I started working in 2010, I served ice cream at a local Dairy Queen making $9.60 an hour, the student wage rate at the time. The thought of one day making $11.25 an hour, the current minimum wage as of 2014, was unimaginable. Although that was only an increase of $1.65 in four years, that still was a great leap.
Another unimaginable great leap occurred during this past Federal election, NDP leader Tom Mulcair promised a federal minimum wage to be increased to $15 by the end of his first term if he was elected. Anyone’s dream of making a minimum wage of $15 an hour vanished as Liberal leader Justin Trudeau was elected Prime Minister in late 2015. However I believe this was for the good of our economy. During a 2015 debate, Trudeau states regarding Mulcair’s promise, “he’s giving Canadians who work in big box stores and behind checkout counters and in shops and coffee shops false hope.” Although Trudeau supported the $15 rate, he criticized it for not covering enough people. This is because the $15 an hour rate was only to workers with wages set by the Federal government which was only about 6% of Canadian workers.
During a recent February media question period in Calgary, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau was asked about a minimum wage increase. Trudeau answered by stating he was worried that an increase would have a negative effect on the economy. Making $15 an hour would be ideal minimum wage, however I argue that having a set minimum wage of $15 will result in many negative implications our society is just not ready for.
Many would like to continue to push for this wage increase as it will reduce the growing inequality of the wealth gap in Canada. With the rich getting richer and poor getting poorer an increase of min...

... is necessary. However it comes down to a greater issue than just wage rates to keep these goods and services at a lower cost. Canada’s swinging inflation and the global climate change concern also impacts the increasing cost for these imported goods, something that a minimum wage of $15 won’t fix.
So when will our society be ready a $15 minimum wage? Who knows. Although a wage increase will help minimum wage families afford things like childcare and a healthier lifestyle, a set $15 minimum wage alone will not make those more affordable. There are too many negative implications that could hurt businesses, the economy and vulnerable groups in its present state.
I won’t be surprised if minimum wage reaches $15 an hour in future years as wage rates are increasing. However at this point in time I do not believe it is necessary for a set minimum wage of $15 to be made.

Wallace Stevens's The Emperor of Ice-Cream Essay

- Wallace Stevens's "The Emperor of Ice-Cream" "The only emperor is the emperor of ice-cream," Wallace Steven's writes in his poem "The Emperor of Ice-Cream" (8). This line proclaiming the ice-cream maker as important as an emperor is used metaphorically to describe the selfishness of human nature. One the surface, the poem is about the wake of a poor, old woman. However, if the metaphors and symbols of the poem are examined, the poem's deeper message becomes apparent. The attenders of the wake, who represent human nature, are uninterested in the dead woman; they are only concerned with their own wants - eating ice-cream....   [tags: Stevens Ice Cream]
