"All I Know Is What I Read In The Papers" - Will Rogers
There have been many criteria over the past few centuries that measured one's political clout and influence: divine right, property, money, and acquaintances. In the twentieth century, particularly the past two decades, the political power to influence others resides in information: the more information you have and the more you know how to use it, the more potential influence you have. People rely on the media for their information, as it is the most easily accessible, efficient, and passive way of acquiring knowledge. Unfortunately, the media is not completely reliable as it can and has been manipulated by politicians, their parties, and their governments. This makes the media a powerful weapon as politicians use it to effect voters political choices through advertising, change popular opinion on issues of state, and debasing political campaigns through smear tactics.
"You can make a candidate someone they aren't. You can protect them from someone they are, or make them more of what they are".-Senator Norm
Atkins(1)
"An election is like a one day sale…the product (candidate) in a sale
(campaign) is only available a few hours on one day".(2)
The main goal one hopes to achieve by advertising something is to make it marketable so people will purchase it. Since what a politician hopes to ultimately do is persuade people to vote for, or buy, their political platform, they would be foolish to not take advantage of the captive and passive audience of the advertising mass media. Unfortunately politicians and their management take advantage of this medium to manipulate voters' choices. Two cases of advertising manipulation on voters was during the Canadian National Referendum of 1992 and the Quebec Referendum of 1995. During the National Referendum of
1992 over the Charlottetown Accord "three hours of free broadcast time was made available during prime time on every radio and television network that met the statutory criteria"(3) according to the Referendum Act. The act also states that "half (of the time) is allocated to the ‘Yes' and half to the ‘No' side"(4).
This allotment of advertising time did not take into account the print advertisement that was plastered al...
... middle of paper ...
... in that matter"(22). Truedeau floored Bouchard by saying that "the federalists would have done better in the recent Quebec referendum "(23) if the Yes side didn't
"make Quebeckers, especially former premier Rene"Levesque, look like victims"(24), Politics is a very dirty game, and if you don't develop a thick skin to deal with the rhetoric then you will not survive the smear campaigns.
"I fear three newspapers more than a hundred thousand bayonets"(25)
The mass media in all its manifestations has a mandate to be a forum for views both directly and indirectly through advertising and journalist reporting, This massive forum has been the place, for many years, that politicians have had their voice. Like many other institutions, the mass media has been utilized as a tool of the political world with which politicians, their parties, and their governments capture the fixated and passive audience, thus making the media a powerful device to affect voters political choices through advertising, change popular opinion on issues of state, and debasing political campaigns with smear tactics.
Bernard Marx, being a male Alpha, is the type of person who just doesn’t really fit in. While just about all people are very open about their thoughts and personal feelings, Bernard is very secretive about many of his thoughts and actions. For instance, when Lenina tries to talk to him about “having her,” his face goes pale and he insists that they discuss it in private (pg 58). He seems to be very concerned about what people would think if he started talking about that kind of stuff in front of them.
Richard Nixon's first term as president will always be connected with the Watergate scandal, the biggest political scandal in United States history. Various illegal activities were conducted including burglary, wire tapping, violations of campaign financing laws, sabotage, and attempted use of government agencies to harm political opponents to help Richard Nixon win reelection in the 1972 presidential elections. There were about 40 people charged with crimes related to the scandal. Most of them were convicted by juries or pleaded guilty. Watergate involved more high-level government officials than any previous scandal. It has been etched in the minds of millions and is still being recalled today when faced with the present day scandal of President Clinton. In All The President's Men, Carl Bernstein and Bob Woodward, former Washington Post reporters, recount, illustrate, and analyze the Watergate scandal time and their work in reporting and revealing these events for the newspaper.
Thomas Paine is undoubtedly one of the most prolific founding fathers of the United States, albeit not in the manner most would expect from a founding father. Paine was not a drafter of the constitution, nor was he an early member of Congress or President of the United States. However, Paine did have a profound impact on society, not only in America, but also abroad. Often remembered for helping spur the American Revolution, yet not as often remembered for the other revolution in France. Two of the more famous writings from Paine are, of course, Common Sense and The Rights of Man, both of which were written during revolutionary times in separate countries. It goes without saying that when a revolution is taking place there will be many on both sides of the war; in both of these instances, Paine was the voice of the people and stood up for what was right regardless of the consequences. I posit Thomas Paine was the most influential man for revolution in America and France despite fear of backlash or imprisonment. In fact, near the end of his life Paine was not only imprisoned, but somehow evaded being beheaded as well. Thomas Paine was even more influential as a result of his extreme lack of self-interest and ability to stay true to the cause of his writings rather than wither away in fear.
At first it is hard to understand why schools are segregated without understanding its causes. There is an obvious social and economic disadvantage, fueled by residential isolation, economic circumstance, and discrimination. I use my first question, why are schools and districts racially and socioeconomically segregated, as an introduction to my analysis. In the article, 60 Years After Brown: Trends and Consequences of School Segregation, authors Readron & Owens (2014) discuss the many factors that contribute to school segregation, and how and why school segregation might affect students. The authors use different indices on how school segregation is measured, being the measurement of isolation or exposure and measures of unevenness. Indices of unevenness measure the extend to which a student population is unevenly distributed among schools, and in contrast, the indices of exposure or isolation measure the extent to which students are enrolled in schools with high or low proportions of a given racial group. (pg. 202) The research done by Readron & Owens demonstrates the different levels of segregation student’s experience, and the consequences it leads to. School resources are distributed among students unevenly, meaning the teachers will be less skilled, there will be less exposure to more challenging curriculum. Housing segregation and school district fragmentation are also largely related to school segregation and student
Everyone wants to be fit and slim. However it seems so unattainable. Everyone is throwing in their two cents until it is impossible to see straight. It is a mess that is being avoided instead of being fixed. When Pollen wrote his article “Escape from the Western Diet” he claimed he was trying to cut through all the clutter surrounding obesity. He even describes it as cult like, foolish, and excessive. However as he begins to talk about what he thinks he emits that same vibe. He openly ridicules most other ways of thinking about food. He ridicules other diet trend like eating more omega3s and cutting carbs; he even goes as far as to ridicule the health care system. He simplifies food into two groups, whole food and industrial food. He claims that as much as possible we need to get all our food from the first category, and that the second is inherently bad. He seems to think he knows best. He seems to think he is making it better however, all he did was add to the ridiculousness by giving people near impossible goals, unhealthy goals, and unrealistic expectations.
Ralph Waldo Emerson’s ideas from his essay Self-Reliance may sound absurd to some, though this also helps to ensure that his ideas on self-reliance are some of the most well known on the subject. Many people these days seem to be more inclined towards focusing almost entirely on the self, rather than going and pleasing other people. There are also other teachings from the past that are contradicted by the ideas in Emerson’s essay. One notable statement that Emerson made was that “Nothing can bring you peace but yourself (Emerson, 47).” This is slowly becoming the truth for most individuals, who are taking up this approach, rather than going around and pleasing other people who only have negativity to offer in return. However, when taking this scenario into the context of what was taught by Jesus of Nazareth to his disciples and followers, the ideas of Emerson should not be considered just hearsay, but in fact can be acted upon by performing good deeds, even if nothing is being given in return.
According to the Department of Homeland Security (2015) “A domestic terrorist differs from a homegrown violent extremist in that the former is not inspired by and does not take direction from, a foreign terrorist group or other foreign power”. The Department of Homeland Security also states that home grown extremists are not bound by borders unlike domestic and international terrorism. Homegrown violent extremists may commit acts that would normally be considered terrorist actions, but are not connected to any terrorist group. Home grown violent extremists are motivated by foreign terrorist ideals but have no direct connection or support from any foreign or domestic terrorist organization. Examples of home grown violent extremists would be the Fort Hood shooter who shared beliefs and ideas of violent radical Islamic terror groups but had no known direct connection to any terror group. It is believed the Fort Hood shooter planned and conducted his attack solely on his own, and thus he is a home grown violent
Politics can be a stressful topic all over the world for a variety of reasons. The most obvious is whether the people elected will actually fulfill their promises and show that they are being honest and trustworthy. Unfortunately, it is more likely than ever that they will deceive the people instead. Artifice can be essential in political theater as well as consumer culture so I agree with Chris Hedges’ statement. A myriad of people have used it to gain fame, money, or power, and eventually abuse it. This can lead to disastrous situations because they might not be qualified for the job. They just need to capture the audience’s attention and woo them into believing their facade. The audience looks for that story in political leaders, waiting for the promises of a better future in their country.
...ke cooking very elaborate dishes. But it’s also important to keep a balanced diet while taking enough calories and proteins to be able to keep going, but some weight loss is expected.
I am fortunate enough to work in county that has only one public school option for students to attend all the way from kindergarten through high school. The only other option is for students is to attend the private school which most do not choose to do. Roughly ninety percent of all students that attend school in my county attend schools that are a part of our system. Therefore, segregation between schools in a particular district is not a problem for me personally and many other rural area schools for that fact. However, the second area of segregation, which is found within a school, is something that I do see personally. While our students may not be segregated between schools, there is definitely segregation within the building. Orfield, et al (2010), states that “white students are often tracked into honors or advanced placement courses, whereas black and Latino students are overrepresented in special education programs” (p 25). While we only offer a one track diploma, a college prep program, students still have the option of enrolling in both honors and advanced placement classes while in both middle school and high school. It is at this level of our school system that we find our student body the most segregated whether it is based on race or income
of a political campaign, to hit hardest at those who are in power or running
The existence of segregation is a cultural and moral issue that has played a crucial role in the decisions made by Texas legislature. Russell W. Ruberger and Gregory J. Palardy, authors of Does Segregation Still Matter? The Impact of Student Composition on Academic Achievement in High School, found that school segregation in America has caused an injustice to students in the public education system because of a lack of equal and fair opportunity based on information from an extensive study, the Coleman report, which was published 12 years ago preceding
According to Aristotle there are three different types of friendships that exist. Friendship that is based on utility, ones that are based on pleasure, and friendship based on goodness of character. The first two kinds are superficial, so they don’t usually last long. Friendship based on goodness of character is the best kind of friendship, because these friends love one another for who they are and not for what they stand to gain from one another. Friendship exists best between
Lord Lionel Robbins was born in 1898, and was one of the many great economists of our time. Robbins was known for his contributions to economic policy, methodology, and the history of ideas, but made his name as a theorist. Robbins was made famous for his definition of economics, "Economics is a science which studies human behavior as a relationship between ends and scarce means which have alternative uses." (The Concise Encyclopedia of Economics 2007) Robbins was able to change the Anglo-Saxon thought economics off its Marshallian process and onto the Continental train of thought.
When I first learned to cook about six years ago, there were no magazine articles or books in bookstores explaining how to cook; there were only cookbooks with recipes for one to decipher. Today, the articles and books that explain how to cook are minimal. Not everyone can compete with Julia Child in cooking gourmet food with the menu devised in our minds without referring to cookbooks, but many of us can learn to cook effectively. A step-by-step process should be followed to learn how to cook successfully.
