In general, I’m just a person who overthinks things too much. I worry too much on details and not about the bigger picture. Not only do I have this problem in real life but in my essay writing. I think too much about the details and not about the overall idea of the essay and the more important components of the essay. I feel quite confident in my overall writing skills but of course there is always room for improvement. Although I am content with my writing skills I believe that there are some higher and lower concerns that I need to work on. Sometimes you just need to take a step back and think of all the components of what makes an essay a good one.
Good essays should have good structure, which includes the introduction, body paragraphs and the conclusion. Good essays should include all these things because it helps organize your thoughts and makes it clear for your audience. The introduction is very important because this is what hooks in your audience and makes them want to keep on reading more. Each body paragraph must have proper structure such as having a main point followed with an explanation as to why you believe that why or why it matters. Giving examples and quotes in essays helps me with giving more insight to my audience. As a reader it makes it easier

Things such as grammar, punctuation, and spelling is something that can be easily improved on. I usually have one of my family members read over my work or I just use an online tool. Online tools such as Paper Rater or even spell check can help you catch those silly mistakes. Online tools can be more helpful than a real person because sometimes people aren’t honest with you 100% of the time. Something I know I need to work on is using “distasteful words” and horrible transitional words as Paper Rater likes to tell
I never really considered myself an "acceptable" writer. I always would panic after realizing I have to write a paper because I never feel prepared or ready. After my semester of English 1102, I realized that I can spot good points for my argument, but I had difficulty analyzing them in terms of my thesis. My thesis and topic sentences were not my strong suits because I either don't dig deep enough, or I panic and add so much to my thesis/topic sentence that the syntax and diction is awkward and confusing. I would spend hours trying to fix these errors because of writer's block and anxiety; however, as the semester kept going, I found it to be easier to fix the errors in my paragraph by asking myself how to improve my paper and asking my peers
Going into this course, I felt that the reading and writing skills I learned in high school were very beneficial in preparing me for an English college course. In high school, I was enrolled in GATE and AP English courses. In these classes, I was assigned several readings and was taught to actively read by doing annotations. I was to summarize the writer 's main points, to write down my own opinions, or to connect it to any personal experiences. These annotations helped me understand the writer 's message better because I was able to break down the things the writer said and only focused on the important points. Then, I was also able to form my own opinion on that topic by deciding whether I agreed or disagreed with the author’s opinion. Moreover, I used evidence from the text to support my argument.
Having trouble writing and punctuating doesn 't make it any easier, is it an excuse to turn in a crappy essay? No of course not I just have to work a little harder than those who don 't have trouble writing. No one is a perfect writer. Even authors makes mistakes. Writing a good college essay is hard because you have to know how to go about writing your paper without sounding like a broken record and you have to make sure its unique so that your reader doesn 't get bored. I have always had a hard time with writing, I will try and better myself because that’s all I can do. I will apply all the things I said I would to make my college essay better and hope it works out, and if it doesn 't then I will try again and see where my mistakes were made and change them because if not I will never learn. writing a college essay is difficult but only as difficult as you allow it to
Many people fail to realize that English writing is a very vital skill that everyone should learn. I always thought that there was not much when it came to writing essays. Usually I am given a topic, I write five paragraphs and then I am done, However, I was wrong. There is more to writing then just writing multiple paragraphs on any given topic. There were many styles and types of essays that I have never done before or knew existed. I was intimidated at first, but my professor provided many activities in order for me to succeed in writing. Many of these activities were intended learn and master different skills so I could become a better writer.
color to be their support (Chapman 319). Since there is such a need for more teachers for students of color to relate to, one would think that the White teachers would try to cross their own cultural barrier to connect with students of color. However, they instead apply the colorblind approach. In Henfield and Washington’s study, they wanted to explore how white teachers navigate their own diverse classroom. One common theme that was interesting was that white teachers would defend themselves when disciplining students of color. The student would tell the teacher that they are being singled out because of their race. The teachers would defend themselves by saying things such as “ [I’m] certainly treating them the same way as the others, but
In high school, writing essays was my weakest link. When I began my first semester of college, I still had that trouble in my first writing composition class. I improved significantly from gaining organization and length. When I started my second writing composition class, my grades for my paper sky rocketed! The essays I have written though out this semester have shown improvements in context and organizations, however, I still have some room for improvement on reasoning’s and thesis statement.
Each essay had the purpose of students demonstrating the ability to evaluate texts from different sources by composing a thesis and supporting that same thesis with relevant credible sources throughout an essay body. Essays are the hardest portion of this entire class. In order for me to write an essay, it required hours and hours of thinking about how to express myself. First, I usually write my thesis to be able to initiate my essay. Secondly, I write a few sentences following the topic and its purpose, placing them in random order. Lastly, I develop those same sentences into larger paragraphs, paying attention to my vocabulary, grammar and also my transitions words to make sure my essay is clear and easy to
As a student, I feel that I have many writing weaknesses. I know that on my own, and because teachers have told me so. Some of the complications I face with writing is not using enough body paragraphs, forgetting a thesis statement, lack of word choice, punctuation errors, and etc. I am unaware at times of my mistakes, but I always try to correct them.
Quite a few obstacles I have yet to overcome within my writing. One of my main issues is my word choice. I often use general words, like “thing” and “them” instead of specifying the idea I am speaking about. I also reuse words repetitively when I should focus on using a wider choice of vocabulary. Also, I need to use more explanations when trying to prove a point. Many times I write a statement and do not go into enough detail to back up my opinion. I do not include enough background information either, writing as if the reader already knows the situation when they do not. One last weakness of mine is maintaining paragraph unity. I tend to begin a new topic in the same paragraph as the last when I should start a new paragraph to retain order. The essay does not flow well when all the topics are grouped together and not spilt up in an organized manor. The positive side to these cons are that they all may be improved with a little work and help from
During my last 3 years of high school I volunteered with a basketball program called the Ottawa Shooting Stars which was the club I played for during my first 3 years playing competitive basketball. The program that the Shooting Stars are running is called Small Ball. It is program for developing skills but mostly for having some fun and introducing young players to the game of basketball. It manly focuses on Fundamentals such as dribbling, shooting, footwork and passing at the most basic level. The age groups of the program range from 4-7 years old. When I first started volunteering I was in grade 10 and our coach had asked us to help out with a program he was running on Friday nights at our high school gym. At the start I was a new volunteer and did not have much responsibility but by my second year I was fully immersed in the program. Each night I
I usually have an idea in my mind, but I cannot always put those words into a sentence that is grammatically correct. When I put these thoughts into a sentence it does not always flow, and sometimes my paper sounds out of place and repetitive. I tend to write papers how I speak instead of actually grammatically correct. I took the advice of proofreading my paper, as well as, have a friend read it for any grammar mistakes. Another major problem I have as a writer is figuring out how to start my essay in the introduction, especially the ones I had never written before. I have to seek help from others to learn how a certain introduction should look and it holds me back tremendously. I have never been a creative writer so I struggle with keeping an interesting paper for my audience. I always end up rambling in my papers. I typically like research papers because I can get information online to strengthen my points in my essay and this semester has focused more on personal experiences. I always preferred when a topic was given to the class, but this year I have been able to grow more independent. I have had to choose my own topic to write about and it has helped me grow more creative in my
Writing an essay is not one of my strengths when it comes to learning English as my second language. I am not fond of writing an essay because I had minimal experience back in high school. Knowing that I have little experience when it comes to writing, I hesitated to sign up for English 211, but I ended up enrolling. In the small time that I am in the class, I had to write five different types of essays. I had to write two character analysis essays, a personal or academic challenge essay, an argumentative essay, and a reflective essay. Writing five different essays within few weeks was challenging. Through the process of writing these essays and with the help of my professor and my peers, I have learned how to organize my ideas,
One of the ways I improved upon my writing was to be more careful about mechanics. This is always a tricky part since English is such a complex language. I have never been the best speller, so I am always trying to improve upon my spelling. I was very conscientious to not rely on spell checkers as I have done in the past. I have had too many papers that were marked down because I wrote “their” instead of “there” and spell check did not catch it. The same can be said of other grammar and punctuation issues.
Much like Benjamin Franklin believed, I feel that a person should take advantage of the time the person has in life with activities a person wants to do or needs to do. A person should not spend much time on activities the person does not want to do. Life is way too short to concern oneself with work or other activities one wants nothing to do with all the time. When possible, I try to forget about my responsibility and just let go of the ‘things’ that do not matter to me. I think a person should try to occupy oneself with something productive, worthwhile, or necessary at all times. Even though a person’s life is left up to a person to live, I cannot imagine thinking that I owe my time to society through working a job that I simply despise. I am a compassionate person, but I do not owe anyone anything regarding my time.
Identify a time when you taught someone something. In a paragraph, describe the situation using the four features of teaching as described by Posner.
