“I Have No Mouth, and I Must Scream” was a fiction short story, written by Harlan Ellison, and first published in IF Magazine: Worlds of Science Fiction on March 1967. It was about a painful journey of five people. Ted, the narrator of this story, described that other four people (Gorrister, Benny, Nimdoc and Ellen) who had already been altered by AM, the supercomputer which had own self aware, and himself can not stand the food provided by AM and started to look for canned food. However, after they found the canned food, they have no means to open it. To help companions to stopped misery, Ted killed all other four people.
In the article, the most interesting thing is that when Ted describes AM, he uses a lot of different nouns and pronouns. “But the machine giggled every time we did it. Loud, up there, back there, all around us, he snickered. It snickered.”, in these sentences, Ted uses three different nouns, “the machine”, “he” and “it” to described AM. Not only the beginning of the essay, many other places also shows Ted’s uncertainty to AM such as ‘It was a mark of his personality: it strove for perfection” and “AM wasn 't God, he was a machine. But today, there are many fiction stories or films having similar ideas such as The Terminator. AM in this story can control human and laugh at human. “The ice flew and shattered, but the can was merely dented, while we heard the laughter of a fat lady, high over head and echoing down and own and own the tundra.” Ted and his companions find canned food but they do not have methods or tools to open them. AM know this fact at the beginning and just watch what they are doing as a joke rather than stop them. In the film Wall-E, produced by Disney and the novel Fahrenheit 451, written by Ray Bradbury illustrate similar themes of how technology can destroy a society. Through technology, humans do not directly communicate with one another, they only interact through screens. Through technology, humans are letting robots and other technology do everything for them, making humans seem inferior to the machines. These futuristic technology based societies are a warning to the modern society to control the human use and production of technology.
Posthuman by Nicholas Gane is a comparison of thoughts from selected scholars on the subject of the increasingly complex relationship between mankind and technology and how these technologies are breaking down the barriers that make us human. He starts by introducing us to the history of the concept of the Posthuman, which started with the cybernetic movement of the 1940’s and most influentially the writings of Norbert Wiener. The real popularity of the subject has its roots with Donna Haraways concept of the cyborg. Her concept is a postive rendition of the idea of posthumanism, which focuses on cybernetic technology and genetic modification and how these technologies could radically change humanity. Crichton didn’t show bias, as he stated both the dangers of mind control and how people need mind control, otherwise we’d be “hopelessly lost without it” (Crichton, 227). He also shows both positive and negative views on technology and computers through his characters. Through Harry Benson, who believes machines will take over the world, shows how harmful certain scenarios could be if we tamper with technology too much; on the other hand, through characters like Gerhard and Richards, who love working with computers, show how beneficial computers are to humans. Gerhard makes a statement that computers never made mistakes, and that “they were never wrong...it always turned out, in the end, to be a human error” (Crichton, 97-98). I really like that Michael Crichton wasn’t biased, and how he showed both sides of the story.
Today’s world is full of robots that vacuum the floor and cars that talk to their drivers. People can ask their phones to send a text or play a song and a cheerful voice will oblige. Machines are taking over more and more tasks that are traditionally left to people, such as cleaning, navigating, and even scheduling meetings. In a world where technology is becoming increasingly human, questions arise about whether machines will eventually replace humankind altogether. In Ray Bradbury’s short stories, “The Veldt” and “August 2026,” he presents themes that technology will not only further replace the jobs of humans, but it will also outlast humankind as a whole. Although this is a plausible future, computers just cannot do certain human jobs.
When talking about the future of technology, one can only imagine what it will be down the road. The future of technology evokes many questions about the preservation of human existence, human advancement and intelligence. Some writers even discuss their positions on the future of technology and human kind. Writers such as James J. Bell, who explains the theory of the ‘Singularity’. In summary, he states that the rate of technological advancement, compared to human intelligence, will one day reach the ‘singularity’ were it will surpass the human mind (pg. 52). We may never know if technology will ever have the power to surpass the human intellect or what the consequences will be if it does attain these capabilities. Will humans still maintain control over them, or will they control us? Theses eight articles illustrate the implicit and explicit control that technology holds over humans in the future.
Science fiction authors of the 1940's and 50's like George Orwell, Ray Bradbury, and Isaac Asimov wrote their books about technological dilemmas such as automation (robots), information technology, and technologically influenced utopias (or depending on the reader, dystopias). Charles Allen once said that "if the human race wants to go to Hell in a basket, technology can help it get there by jet." In the era of the mentioned authors, technology was a new and exciting idea, and the concept of technology causing so many problems was far from their minds. Today, however, our lives are practically dictated by technology.
Writers like Amy Tan, use rhetorical writing to display emotional appeal, tone, style, and even organization. In Tan’s article, Mothers Tongue, she writes about her experiences with her mother's inability to speak English. She provides examples from her childhood of being discriminated, and stereotyped because of her race. Tan addresses cultural racism without showing any anger or specifically pointing out racism. She makes the reader realize that immigrants have to deal with discrimination, and disrespect in their daily lives. She uses Ethos, Pathos, and Logos to let the reader see what she went through in her early childhood experiences. Her audience reaches out to families who speak “broken English”, and have to deal with being discriminated, and disrespected.
This conflict can be observed in the film Chappie. The idea that technology could reach a point where police officers could be replaced by machines is indicative of the idea of how humans’ behavior and actions can be affected by the technology accessible to them. In this case, the technology is changing human action by removing humans from harm’s way and replacing them with machines. The change in human action as a result of technology brings up the question of whether the new human action is necessarily an improvement. As was seen in the film, the new technologies brought forth the debate of the morality of using such advanced robots. The uncertainty of the merit or value of technology is present in many of the interactions with technology seen in the course. With the changes brought about by technology, there also exists a conservative sentiment that does not see such changes as necessary. This resistance to technology can be seen in Marx, with the push for a return to a pastoral life. One other instance of the way that technology has shaped human behavior is one of the examples presented in lecture. An article spoke of how a statue was being moved as a result of too many people bumping into it because they were texting while walking and thus distracted. This provides an example of
Many of Ray Bradbury’s works are satires on modern society from a traditional, humanistic viewpoint (Bernardo). Technology, as represented in his works, often displays human pride and foolishness (Wolfe). “In all of these stories, technology, backed up by philosophy and commercialism, tries to remove the inconveniences, difficulties, and challenges of being human and, in its effort to improve the human condition, impoverishes its spiritual condition” (Bernardo). Ray Bradbury’s use of technology is common in Fahrenheit 451, “The Veldt,” and The Martian Chronicles.
The film display the same type of “what if” writing, but applied to the genre of science fiction and explores both the limits of the human mind and the frightening possibilities of what machines may be capable of. The basis for the whole story is that of what if what is thought of as reality is someone or something else’s imagination. In the story, the world that most people live in is a kind of virtual reality for the mind while the body is grown for the sole reason of fuelling the machines. All this came about when humanity invented artificial intelligence, they gave machines the power of choice. Now that the machines could choose, they could use their imagination to rebel against their creators and rule the world. Humanity fought back and blocked the sun (the machines’ source of power) in an attempt to stop them. But the machines used their imagination to think of a new fuel. They made people living batteries, because of all the energy they generate to live, and grew them in fields of crops of healthy bodies and fed them the liquefied dead while their minds were kept active and alive in a virtual reality. The film, because the machines are declared “intelligent” once they are able to choose, gives the theory that the imagination equals intelligence, like Northrop Frye’s theory. In The Machine Stops, E.M. Forster projects life years from now where people live underground with extreme technological advances. Also, people live separated in little rooms where they find a variety of buttons they can press in order to perform any task they desire. They do not communicate with people face to face as often as we do now. Without a doubt, their society is very different from ours. All of the inhabitants are used to living along with the Machine and it is hard for them to imagine life without everything the Machine is able to facilitate. People are so caught up with technology that they find it absurd to spend time in nature. Because of the dependence people have towards the Machine, they have somewhat lost their humanity and become a machine themselves. The characters Vashti and Kuno perfectly represent how inhumane or humane a person could potentially be in such an environment.

The robots are taking over and planning to destroy humanity as it currently stands. They’re smarter, faster, and stronger making them superior to humans in every way. Because humans were too lazy and put all their faith in technology it was easy for the machines to rise up and take over. Soon all of humanity will be enslaved by robots and computers. This is the plot for thousands of science fiction movies and novels in which humans make computer, personal robots servants, and other technology that are so advanced and make life easier that in the end humankind has lost most of its intellect and physical abilities dooming the world to a fate that has inspired many armageddon theories. Would it be the start of a new era for humanity? Or extinction? It’s on this issue that Transcendence is based. The idea is not new. The transfer of a human being into a computer is often reflected on in science fiction theory or even its expansion via the Internet and its worldwide takeover, which is the basis of the plot in Terminator. But Transcendence is not about machines uprising. It’s about the human identity and the limit we want to give it. The movie elaborates and reflects on a situation that it wants to make us believe is possible in today’s world. Are we still far? Artificial intelligence is increasingly present in our lives. Our minds have created many remarkable things, however the best invention we ever created is the computer. computers are constantly growing and becoming better every day. Every day computers are capable of doing new things. Even though computers have helped us a lot in our daily lives, many jobs have been lost because of it, now the computer can do all of the things a man can do in seconds! Everything in the world relies on computers and if a universal threat happens in which all computers just malfunction then we are doomed. Computers need to be programmed to be able to work or else it would just be a useless chunk of metal. And we humans need tools to be able to live; we program the computer and it could do a lot of necessary functions that have to be done.
