There are many events in history that include the expression of equality and freedoms. There are works on equality and or freedoms that have overriding themes. Three of these freedom or equality works are Thomas Jefferson’s Declaration of Independence, Martin Luther King Jr.’s I Have a Dream, and Elizabeth Cady Stanton’s Declaration of Sentiments and Resolutions. Each of these works relate to either freedom or equality, but they have different priorities and goals. Many of the goals of each were either met or unmet. There are many theories and works created to make an attempt to depict an ideal society. Three of these works are Thomas More’s Utopia, Ursula Le Guin’s The Ones Who Walk Away from Omelas, and Niccolo Machiavelli’s The Prince. There …show more content…

In this society everyone is working in trade including women. They all wear the same type of clothing. It is stated that everyone is doing “essential work”. There is no notion that “you’re better than people if you can display more super property”. More sees being rich or wealthy as a negative because of pleasure that is not natural. It is expressed that real pleasure is from mental and physical pleasures. Mental pleasures are from satisfaction from understanding or contemplating truth. Physical pleasures are from regular functioning of the body. This society puts human thought and functioning over greed. In Ursula Le Guin’s The Ones Who Walk Away from Omelas, it speaks of society that is happy when there are people of low health and wealth. There is a child that lives horribly in a basement and is ignored. It is expressed that society will not live without the child being miserable. There are people who had guilt in the belief of happiness through a certain miserable child, and they walked away from Omelas. This theme seems familiar because today it is common to ignore the poor and homeless. In Niccolo Machiavelli’s The Prince, the work focuses on the power of a prince. This work states ways a prince should rule. It is stated the prince must be generous, be able to defend himself, merciful, and loved. It is stated important that this prince preaches peace and
