Nursing Interview Paper

For this assignment I had the pleasure sitting down with Emily Petermeier and getting an insight on what the real nursing world is like. Emily graduated from the University of Minnesota School of Nursing in May 2015, and got a job at Fairview East Bank Hospital. This interview really helped me understand what it is like to be a new nurse and the dedication that I have to have going through nursing school and throughout my career. In the interview you will see the perspective of Emily’s endeavors after college and insight for future nurses or nursing students.
For the first part of the interview I really focused how Emily got to where she is and why she wanted to pursue nursing. My first question entailed, “What made you want to become a nurse?”

I prefer to work closely with patients and build that connection with them.” This answer didn’t really shock me all that much, I think its really common for people to go for pre med and then find/figure out that they wont be able to really establish and connect well with the patients. My next question was simple and asked, “Was it your dream to always become a nurse, and did anyone have an influence on your decision?” Emily explained that she has always wanted to work in the medical field, but didn’t really know which area or career path until college. She also went on to say that both her mother and sister are nurses, but her mother had the most impact because Emily was able to be in the hospital a lot during high school and started volunteering when she was young. Knowing Emily’s background it doesn’t surprise me that she went for nursing, there is clearly a family history of it. Also, with Emily volunteering at a young age she was really exposed to the hospital setting which would help her choose a career. I just got a volunteer position at St. Paul Children’s Hospital which I am very excited for because I will be able to experience the hospital setting and really see why Emily is so excited about nursing. With Emily graduating from the University of Minnesota School of Nursing, I knew I would be getting useful and excellent advice from her. The first most important question I asked was, “What was the hardest part about nursing school?” Emily commented that the “clinical preparation worksheet were time consuming given you had to start on the worksheets a day before the clinical, then go to clinicals early to look up information, then after spend several hours looking up different medications and lab values.” With this being said I am definitely not surprised because I know that the nursing program is very time consuming as a whole, and it is a very competitive program. However, I am so excited and driven for this challenge because in the end of all the schooling, I will have achieved one of my biggest goals. The next question asked, “Do you have any advice to someone like me that is going into the nursing field?” Emily confidently answered with, “Keep an open mind about all the different specialties. Especially during school, be willing to try different areas and working with different populations.” I am really glad that Emily gave me this advice because I am so interested in pediatrics, but I also need to keep in mind that I need to experience working with different
