HOST: Today, more and more students choose to study aboard in America, such as Chinese students. Some people may think that international students can easily get together with local students. However, things are really different from that. The truth is that most Chinese international students always cannot get along well with American students. Only few Chinese international students have local American friends and even so, they just have fewer American friends. Why they cannot make American friends? Besides, as some parents are highly control their children, does this pheonomene make pressure on students from their parents and how can we solve that? Jia Ren, a Chinese international students who study at ASU, talks about her situations about having American friends or not. Jia: I don’t have American friends. I think the most difficult part avoiding me to be a great friend with them is language. Host: Jia Ren talks about her situation that she doesn’t have American friends and also she points out a problem to hinder her become friends with American is the language. Jia Ren also explains it specifically. Jia: I always afraid to talk to them. It’s because I don’t know if I talk about this or talking in this form, they will be angry with me or not. I afraid that what I said may cause another meaning to American students, which may cause some problems. Host: People have to admit which Jia Ren said that the different-meaning parts of language will always cause problems when we are communicating. This is a big problem of international students cannot communicate with local students. Host: So, the main reason Mr. Deng not to blame her daughter on making no American friends is communication. We all know that communication can solve many problems, thus, Chinese students can try to talk to their parents to prevent parents-control on friends making. Moreover, according to our interviews, the most important two problems preventing international students to make local friends are language and inner factors. Local American students think that language is a problem but the problem is that international students always stay only with same nation students and speak their own language. By the end, it is easy to see that both sides students can do a little thing to change this problem. But we still hope the university can provide a hand to help them.
Growing up as a first generation Chinese-American, I felt as if I was stranded in the void between two worlds, isolated and alone. At school, I hid my Chinese self and tried to be more ‘American’ in order to fit in. At home, I then carefully tucked away my American half and acted the dutiful Chinese son to please my parents. If Chinese and American were two planets, I was a vagabond flitting back and forth between them, unsettled and insecure, never quite belonging in either one.
Moreover using personal language in public places make friends hard to get close. When Chinese immigrants enter the United States of America, it is evident from the start that they are in a world far different than their homeland. Face to face with a dominant culture that often times acts and thinks in ways contrary to their previous lives, immigrants are on a difficult path of attempting to become an American. Chinese immigrants find themselves often caught between two worlds: the old world of structured, traditional and didactic China and the new world of mobile, young and prosperous America. They nostalgically look back at China longing for a simpler life but look at the United States as a land of opportunity and freedom that they did not know in China. For this is why they came to America in the first place, to provide for their children and themselves what they could not in China. To do this, of course, they are faced with the challenge of assimilating. Learning the language, acquiring education, owning property, etc. are all ways to seize the American Dream. However this poses a problem for the Chinese immigrant for, in the process of assimilation, they lose some of their Chinese culture. This especially rings true for the children of Chinese immigrants: the second-generation Chinese Americans.
We have all been in a situation where we have immigrated to a new country for different reasons regarding, better future, or education. In the book Jade of Peony, Wayson Choy describes a struggle of a Chinese immigrant family as they settle in Canada, through the perspective of three young children; Liang, Jung, and Sekky. Each child describes his or her struggle, while settling in a new country. The family struggles to keep their children tied to their Chinese customs and traditions as they fit in this new country. The Chinese culture needs to be more open minded as it limits the future generation’s potential. Chinese culture limitations are seen through the relationship expectations, education, gender roles and jobs.
What this tells us, or rather the challenges faced by South Asian Americans through the lens of Americans is that they are barbaric, living in close quarters, with more than the “normal” number of individuals in a room or even a building. Another interaction with Erica was when they were both in the ocean and Erica comments “I don’t think,” she said finally, “I’ve ever met someone our age as polite as you” (Hamid 25). What this tells us, or rather the challenges faced by South Asian Americans is that they have to be extra nice and polite in order to compensate for their “barbaric and backwardness” view that Americans tend to associate with these group of people. And of which has been heightened following the aftermath of 9/11. Another interaction with Erica was when she invited Changez over her parent’s apartment for the very first time and during a conversation with Erica’s father, he asked Changez how things were back home, to which he had replied back as “quite good, thank you” (Hamid 54). However, her opinion that the American does not try to know other ethics group is not valid. As my personal experience, I know many Chinese students that spend time with Chinese students. They still have American friends. But, in daily life we almost walk and study with Chinese student. Thus, I think that Nathan’s claim is valid. Another conflict that we discovered was a language barrier between Chinese American children and their parents. Many Chinese American children do not know how to speak Chinese, and those that knew it as children lose much of their knowledge of the language as they try to fit in to school in America. This makes communication between parents and children very difficult. We saw an example of this in the beginning of the movie when all the elders were speaking Chinese while playing mah jong and one of the daughters could not understand what they were saying.

I went to a small public high school, which has only 2 Chinese students, including me. All of a sudden my world is completely changed, nothing from my old days is left, and I’m totally not ready for that. Coming to the United States for college can introduce cultural differences that even the most prepared students might not anticipate. From campus life to classroom etiquette, US school can be quite a different experience from learning in other countries around the world. It is rather natural for students from other countries to join communities that somehow remind them of home and give them the opportunity to remain connected with their roots and at the same time bring the world a little closer to fellow classmates. By raising collective cultural awareness, organized expressions of diversity which create a cultural spillover from which we all benefit.
In recent years, a growing number of parents are sending their children to study abroad. In 2011, the university of Cambridge had nearly 1,000 Chinese students who studied in undergraduate or postgraduate degrees in engineering, sciences, mathematics, international relation, economics,finance and administration (BBC news, 2011). Parents believe that their children may will become more self-conscious, because their children have to look after themselves and manage their finance (Topuniversities, 2014). Homesickness is a common issue among college students, particularly international students. Being an international student myself, I have experienced such phenomena. Ho (2010) reports that being homesick isn’t sorely about missing home itself but missing the things we love at home. Nonetheless, college students can overcome homesickness by making the most of what they have.
