Western Oregon University
Western Oregon is a standard 4-year, medium sized college. It is located in the small, rural town of Monmouth, but only 10 miles from an urban city. Being primarily residential, Western Oregon brings a certain family vibe, which they claim you cannot find anywhere else. Many students say that their favorite part of Western Oregon is the size, since it gave them more one-on-one time with their professors. There are a total of eighty-three majors. Before financial aid and any scholarship money are entered the tuition is $8,274 for in-state students, while out-of-state student’s tuition is $21,759.

The total expected cost includes tuition and fees, room and board (not included for off campus residents,) books and supplies, estimated personal expenses, and transportation expenses. You are required to have at least a 2.75 cumulative high school grade point average or a composite score of 21 on the ACT or a combined score of 1000 on the Critical Reading and Mathematics sections of the SAT Reasoning Exam. ... I decide to continue playing volleyball in college Western Oregon would be one of my top choices because the coaches are extremely nice and the players are like a family, which is perfect for me. Another aspect is the fact that my brother played football at WOU. I would love to carry on the athletics of my family at Western Oregon! The environment that surrounds the campus is perfect for me. It is in country, but not far from the city. The safety of the campus also makes me want to go there. Since they just invested in their new health and wellness center you can see that they are making improvements to their campus. Finally, I think that I would enjoy studying in the medical field and they now have that. Western Oregon seems like a perfect fit for me! I really enjoyed learning about the wonderful university and I hope that it is one of my options for college.
Iowa State University is a land grant school which, among other things, means that the university gets money from the state of Iowa from the taxes that residents pay to the state. Because of this in state residents who choose to go to the university do not have to pay a large amount of money while out-of-state residents have to pay almost twice as much. Iowa State University does not have reciprocity, meaning that even residents from the surrounding states, Minnesota, Illinois, etc., have to pay full out-of-state tuition. Out-of- state residents have to pay about $9000 a year for tuition, while Iowa residents pay only about $2500 per year. (See fig1 for semester costs)

Why should a student attend an HBCU, some may ask. Those considering attending college should attend an HBCU no matter what their race or ethnicity may be. Many people think HBCUs are only African American colleges due to what the acronym stands for, Historically Black Colleges and Universities. According to CollegeXpress, “HBCUs do primarily serve African American students, but that doesn’t mean you’re going to have a limited cultural experience. On the contrary, people from all over the world come to the United States to attend HBCUs, which results in diverse student bodies.”(1) Anyone can attend and sometimes when an individual is not black and decides to attend an HBCU, scholarships are given because they want to show that they are willing to accept anyone, regardless of their race. Some HBCUs that are listed as being the best are: Hampton University, Howard University, Morehouse College, and Spelman College, but they are just a few of many out there to attend. There are also several famous people who attended HBCUs: Jesse Jackson, Wanda Sykes, Samuel Jackson, Toni Morrison, and Oprah Winfrey. Many students that have attended an HBCU love the friendly environment, the diversity, and the knowledge gained. If a student is not financially stable, the HBCU is willing to work out payment arrangements and help out in an effort for the student to receive the education that they deserve. It appears that a large portion of those that attend Virginia Union University came because of the cultural experience or because someone in their family attended and they want to continue the legacy. There are over 100 HBCUs in the world, which include public, private, two year, and four year institutions. Most HBCUs have small class siz...
