Being close with a sibling is very important to many people and in the novel I am the Messenger by Markus Zusak, a 19 year-old Australian boy named Ed is struggling with his relationship with his brother. Ed is going nowhere in his life, while his brother Tommy is going to college and making something of himself. Ed and Tommy are not very close, but Ed wishes they were. The theme of brothers who have a relationship that needs repairing is a recurring theme in the novel. There are two other pairs of brothers in the novel who have issues with each other. In the novel Ed tries to contribute to improving those relationships. The novel has a big focus on brothers and trying to fix their relationships. The first brother relationship that is focused on in the novel is with the main character and his brother. Compared to Tommy, Ed is a complete failure according to mother. Tommy is going to college to become a lawyer, while Ed is going nowhere with his life and is driving a cab for a living. Ed and his bother hardly talk and even when they do nothing is really said.
