How to Be Healthy: The 6 Basic Principles I spent a lot of time wondering how to be healthy when I was obese. I wondered why my siblings were normal and thin. I wondered why I was different and fat. I wondered ‘What am I doing wrong? How can I be healthy?’ This thought bounced around in my little brain for almost 10 years. Lucky for me, I finally learned how to be healthy. It took longer than I would’ve liked but I don’t regret my journey. Learning what being healthy means made me the person I am today. I gradually made small changes to my life. The small changes slowly added up and began to form these six principles. Here are the basics on how to be healthy. What does it mean to be healthy? What does it mean to be eat healthy? Funny how chocolate is the last ingredient in Oreos. The food you eat makes you healthy Eating healthy means focusing on eating whole, minimally processed plant foods. I call this a whole-food plant based (WFPB) diet. It’s comforting to eat vegan butter, cheese, and meat to transition away from animal products. Unfortunately, none of these foods promote health. They’re only slightly better than their counterparts. Vegan replacements have no cholesterol. On the other hand, they’re processed and often contain flavorings, additives and refined ingredients. All of this turns a healthy plant into empty calories. I definitely had a hard time with this one. If you’ve read my story, I was all about labels for longer than I care to admit. At first I tried being vegan. Then I went into raw veganism. After that it was raw ‘til 4. I was obsessed with labeling my diet. I thought one of these labels would help me lose weight and make me happy. Boy was I …show more content…
Instead, focus on eating high-carbohydrate foods, such as: • Whole grains (wheat, corn, oats, etc.) • Pseudo grains (quinoa, buckwheat, etc.) • Legumes (black beans, chickpeas, lentils, etc.) • Fruits • Vegetables There are a few exceptions to each food group. For example, legumes like peanuts and soy are high in fat. And avocados—a fruit—are high in fat, too. But as long as you stick to the typical foods I’ve outlined above, you’ll eat a diet rich in carbohydrates. > Read more about Macronutrients in my article Macronutrients—Everything You Need to Know (and more). It’ll give you a run-down of each macronutrient and why they’re important. Fat is addicting I had a tough time reducing my fat when I went vegan. At first I at loads of tofu, peanut butter, added oil and soy milk. When I switched to raw veganism, I ate way too much oil, nuts and seeds. It took a while for my taste buds to adjust to eating a high carb, low fat diet. But after I made the switch, high fat meals felt uncomfortably heavy on my tongue and stomach. Fat is addicting. We love fat because it’s uncommon and signifies food that’s loaded with calories. > Fat is more than twice as calorically dense as carbohydrates. Fat has 9 calories per gram. Carbs have just
Imagine living a life without eating anything with an animal product in it. No meat, fish, milk, eggs, honey, not even gelatin. Vegans are people who adapt a lifestyle where they live without any animal based goods; some do this for the health benefits that come with eliminating meats and dairy. Many become vegan as a way to protest and eliminate animal cruelty which is extremely apparent in the meat industry. A vegan diet is based largely on fruits, vegetables, grains, nuts, and soy. Many people would say this is unhealthy, that a person cannot live like this. Much of this skepticism comes from being misinformed, and under informed about veganism. It is safe to live a vegan lifestyle. On a vegan diet a person can get all the vitamins
When a person eats foods that are high in carbohydrates the body produces more insulin, which causes the body to quickly change food into body fat. This is why the low carbohydrate diets like the Atkins diet restricts a person to eat very small amount of food that contains
According to the article Carbohydrates, “ Carbohydrates provide the body with glucose, which is converted to energy used to support bodily functions and physical activities.” (Harvard school of public health 2011). Carbohydrates are found in many foods. They are a very important to maintain the body, “ They also come in a variety of forms. The most common and abundant forms are sugars, fiber, and starches.”
Evidence Based Nutrition I do see why vegans want to fight against on animals or slaughtered. But what vegans don’t understand is meat is an essential part of our diet. Yes we can survive without it but if you compare a 60yr old vegan to a 60yr old regular dieted person, you will see how much of an impact not eating meat has on the body.
It is known for accumulating body fat and resulting in high level of cholesterol. According to health.harvard.edu, “In addition to raising the risk for colorectal cancer and other health problems, it can actually shorten your life.” Even though we are aware of consuming meat will leave us with obesity and related health disasters, we hardly try to change. Some of us may decide to reduce our intake but we lack the commitment. To escape the temptation we must stop being in the middle and turn to vegan completely.
Most people’s New Year resolution tend to be losing weight, help the environment, and feel healthier and you can gain all of that at once when you switch over to a vegan diet. Veganism is where you do not eat any animal products such as dairy, eggs, and meat. The purpose of this way of eating is more of a lifestyle than a diet. People who become vegan also have to read beauty products and clothing items to see if they are used either for animal testing or made of animal skin. Vegans all over the world enjoy this diet because it helps the animals and benefits their body.
Vegan life is healthier for the nutritional benefits are better when compared to non-vegan eating. The majority of people in the world consume a diet, which contains food derived from animals. Those who have animal derived diets follow such a diet due to commonly known nutrition benefits and taste that come with the diet. Although, most people were told that such a diet was healthy, they wouldn’t follow such a diet if they knew the harm that came with it. Furthermore, several people know they require fruits, vegetables, and grains, according to the commonly known food nutrition chart. However, some people do not know that animal derived food is not necessary and that there are other healthier foods to replace them. Vegan diets follow the food chart needs without consuming food that come from animals by replacing the nutritional benefits that come from animals with plant-based foods that also have the same nutritional benefits.
According to Bonnie Beezhold et.al found that vegans and vegetarians, “…report better mood than non-vegetarians, suggesting that even less animal food intake is associated with better mood” (293). Also, Beezhold et.al, “…have found that the risk of major chronic diseases such as obesity, heart disease, and type-2 diabetes may be reduced by adopting a completely plant-based diet vs. an omnivore diet” (Beezhold et.al 289). Overall, the medical community has agreed that veganism is a healthy option to avoid disease, but their concerns are that vegans will be deficient in certain vitamins and minerals that the regular omnivores are not deficient in. If a vegan is deficit in a certain mineral or vitamin that person can take supplements to combat it. People can say that if I take supplements will that make me healthy even though I consume meat? No, because you are consuming meat and that can clog arteries and increase cholesterol. I think that veganism is probably one of the healthiest options available for everyone. I also think that it is the healthiest because you do not see people become fat off of eating vegetables and fruits. I also agree with Beezhold et.al findings which show that vegans have less stress and anxiety because of the food they ate. Beezhold et.al think this may be because omnivores consume meat and the food the animals were fed where “…higher in certain
Therefore, it’s no surprise that United States has the highest rate of adult/child obesity, high cholesterol, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, cancer etc. These conditions all link back to our diet. Furthermore, cardiovascular disease is the number one leading cause of deaths in the United States. A research done by Physicians Committee has stated that 2,200 Americans die of cardiovascular disease daily. And how does cardiovascular disease start? From eating foods with high sodium, high in cholesterol and saturated fats—meat, eggs and dairy! And because United States constantly consumes meat, dairy and eggs it results in clogged arteries and raises the risks of cardiovascular disease. However, a person on a vegan diet has a low risk of getting any of the conditions
There should always be a balance between the good macronutrients. Even though you might want to eliminate fats from your daily intake, the USDA concludes that all of the macronutrients are vital in combination with the others. They advocate that daily calories from fats should account for 20-40% of the person's daily calories.
Being vegan also also reduces pollution in many ways. Having a vegan lifestyle will reduce the methane/ nitrous oxide. This production of gases comes from cows and sheep which account for thirty seven percent of the total methane. Thats twenty three times more than all human activity produces. It also reduces the amount of water wasted. It takes about 13,000 to 100,000 liters of water to produce two point two pounds of beef but only 1,000 to 2,000 liters for two point two pounds of wheat. Another issue is the manure or waste water containing manure that come from factory farms do extreme damage to river and stream ecosystems. Farmed animals produce 130 times as much feces as the entire United States human population. Unlike cities that have sewage systems factory farms do not which so it ends up polluting waters, destroying top soil, and contaminating the air we rely on to breathe. Also the production of meat requires up to three times as many resources as the production of plant foods which leads to even more harm done to the earth through pollution and global warming.
Although the idea of a vegan lifestyle is not a brand-new concept, there has been an increase in those who adopt this lifestyle in recent years. Some may think of veganism as simply a trend or a fad diet, but there are many people in the world who have fully embraced veganism and see it not as a diet, but as a way of life. It’s necessary to explain exactly what being vegan means. Veganism involves not only refraining from eating meat, but also not eating any animal-derived product, such as dairy. It is also important to note that there is a difference between being a vegan, and eating a vegan diet. Ethical vegans, who do not eat animal products typically do so because they disagree with killing or mistreating
In today’s fast-paced, modern and practical society people are becoming more health conscious. This includes trying to choose the best available options for a beneficial lifestyle. Exotic Greek salads, fresh fruit juices, delicate tofu preparation, smelly grilled vegetables, creamy grains soups, moisten carve soufflés, and so much more are common elections for meals for many people. They are becoming more concerned these days about the increasing health risks of a meat-based diet. On the other hand, others have taken a step further and believed that animal cruelty involved in killing animals and using them for their products is inhumane and should be outlawed. Since meat-eating has been an accepted part of the human diet across the spectrum of many civilizations for millions of years, a controversy emerges between those who want to be banned the use of animal products and those who enjoy a steak now and then. Should people consider becoming a vegan?
