From the feedback I got from my peer reviewer, my paper was in the right path. What was missing was structure. As the structure went, I did not have structure it was one long paragraph that did not have a start and an end. So, I added more content to the paragraphs because they needed more sentences to back them up. What I also did was I broke down the paper into introduction, body paragraphs and the conclusion. I also got the chance to reread my paper and correct any miss interpretation and mistakes I had. I also was able to fill in the gaps of what main points were missing. I was able to add on more context from the book. I see strength into the structure in essay as it flows better. I see transformation which for me is good, I used some advice from the book. As this semester progresses I will like to continue working on essays and vocabulary, I think vocabulary says a lot about someone especially in a reading. The knowledge you have shown in the way you try to communicate with the reader. I think the grade I earned in this essay is a B+ because I answer all the questions to my ability that were given …show more content…
I saw on the first day what I came with from the previous English classes from writing a simple essay to a research paper. Even simple things, like how to grab the reader’s attention by making the paper seem like it is having a full conversation with the reader. Reading this book gave me a better understanding on what I am lacking in my papers and what I am doing well. I want to be more organized in my essays because I tend to go all over the place when I do not know how to start it. As of the knowledge I brought to the class and what I want to learn. This class English 1010: Basic Writing will help me learn more techniques and expand my vocabulary that should be expected once I get in English
English 101 is one of the most common college courses in the world. When I enrolled in the class, I was bothered that I would have spend forty hours in a freshman writing class; along with at least another forty hours throughout the semester writing for the class. What surprised me, was that when I began writing my essays I was not annoyed or bothered; I actually enjoyed the assignments. Most importantly, throughout the course of the semester, I have become a better writer and have ultimately met the course goals of English 101.
This trimester I began the class English 101 with mixed feelings. Depending on the topic and style, I could really enjoy writing. However, there were occasionally times where I just did not feel much inspiration, and consequently, my writing quality was not exactly remarkable. My previous course to English 101 was AP Literature, where I learned how to analyze writing and write powerful papers. Although, to my disadvantage for this class, the teacher was more concerned about content than presentation and grammar technicalities. I learned to create good ideas and responses, and while I did possess the ability to convey them with proficiency, I could not express myself at a college level. Nonetheless, I can happily report that I have acquired these skills throughout English 101, learning to curb my near addiction to prepositional phrases, in addition to halting my use of coordinating conjunctions to begin sentences. I find it pleasing to read and compare my first essay to my latest one, seeing all of the differences and enhancements. My writing has improved through the trials of in-depth analyses and short deadlines, enabling me to perform my best no matter the style or topic. Overcoming the oppositions found in the class and my own
I have studied English since I was a grade seven, but the curriculum in my middle school and high school years, mainly focuses on reading and speaking components of language skills, with a little focus on writing. As a result, I never felt confident with any piece that I was asked to write. Writing has been a hurdle for me to succeed in college since most of the courses in college requires one or the other way writing skill. Consequently, I have decided to work on my writing skills, and have started working on it; even before, I started taking this English 101 class. I used to use a various educational material which I thought might help me to meet my writing goal. Some of the materials which I was using includes: TOEFL educational materials, You Tube resources, and various novels. All of these resources have helped me to polish my writing skills. Furthermore, after I started taking this class, I have learned to enjoy writing. I have made it a point to communicate my own thoughts and feelings as opposed to simply summarize the thoughts of famous writers and authors before me. This class builds up my confidence in my own writing and for that I am highly appreciative.
As the first semester of my sophomore year wraps up, I begin to realize that I have learned a lot in all of my classes. The class that I learned the most from has definitely been my English 111 course. This class have given me so many opportunities to improve my writing skills. With all of the success I’ve had in this class, I believe I will do just fine with writing later in my life.
Not only does the chapter “Introduction to students” help inform a student on tips to improve their reading skills but the chapter also contains a section for helping students improve on their own skills as writers as well. On 9-10 of 50 Essays, One very helpful piece of advice is that “instead of trying to put a piece together out of thin air” but in be more patient and take your
Every English 111 textbook should consist of three main things: the proper way to write an academic essay, review of proper grammar, mechanics word usage and a short transition chapter of the difference between writing in high school and college writing. Successful College Writing by Kathleen T. McWhorter has many of the essentials but noticed it lacked examples of a noble essay. All throughout class students critiqued essays but never actually saw an example of a good, noteworthy complete essay. Having examples of what a person shouldn’t do in an essay is always beneficial but should be followed by a precise academic essay. How are the student supposed to improve their academic writing skills if they have nothing to go by? Just because the book lacks a few of the basic essentials doesn’t mean the book itself will not be beneficial in any way. The book as a whole is pleasing but still has room for revisions.
Throughout the semester I have learned an astounding amount of information. The English 101 curriculum has not only taught me how to write in general, but also taught me a variety of ways to get my point across to the reader. Before I took English 101 I was an average writer at best, but now that I am taking a class that focuses on writing strategies I feel that I have been able to improve as a writer. During the course we were taught how to write an informative essay as well as how to write a persuasive essay. The type of writing that this class has taught me will most definitely help me with future classes as well as my future in the real world. Throughout the English 101 course I have been able to improve as a writer by composing essays
Another course outcome I have mastered in English 102 is continuing to apply the writing skills covered in English 101. One of the course objectives in English 101 was to compose essays with appropriate content development, organization and style by practicing the steps of the
FORM: A slight smile lies upon the lips of the supposed dying warriors, a characteristic unanticipated in one experiencing major discomfort. Upon the west pediment, a warrior pierced with an arrow appears to be disregarding his agony. He props himself up on a single arm, body tense, regardless of his fresh wound. Regardless he is still obviously in anguish, his smile perhaps ore of a grimace. Dissimilarly, the warrior atop the east pediment seems to be actually responding to his terminal condition with a body form proposing pain. His shield lingers in his clutch, his spare arm gravely attempting to sustain his weight. Both are nude expressing their weakness, utterly bare and defenseless. The configuration of the two bodies uncovers the fragility of life as well as men; how easily breath can be snatched from the beholder.
As writers, many students write to the expectations of their professors and not to their fullest potential. Throughout English 101 I had been writing only to please my professor or to fill the basic requirement to pass English. I always felt that my writing ability was never enough for my professors throughout the previous years. They always wanted clear and concise essays, which for some reason was unreachable by me. However, starting college and taking English 101 helped me with my weaknesses and changed my technique of writing essays. My experience in English 101 taught me to write to my fullest potential and to write what I felt; rather then writing what was required.
I have always known that writing was not my strong point. Entering writing 101 in September I was very much afraid. I knew that the expectations would be very high for this course; thus it would be more difficult than any other writing class I had previously taken. At first writing was a nightmare for me, but thanks to the assistance from professor Smart and my tutors, I have improved drastically in my writing skills and, as a result I am now a better writer. During the course of four months, I have learned so much. There were a few bumps in the way throughout the semester, but I managed to overcome them. It is hard to believe that my journey in writing 101 is coming to an end. Through my hard work and dedication, this class has helped me to build confidence in my writing that will help me throughout my college life.
The feedback that I was provided by Cayla helped me tremendously because previously I lacked confidence in my writing because I had no clue if anyone else shared the same view as I. She expressed that she has similar views and told me to further extend my ideas. Admittedly I was afraid of being judged for having this sort of view but she helped me realize that I am not alone in believing this, and most importantly to not limit my writing based off of my fear of being judged by my peers. If I were to grade this assignment, I would give myself a middle B because I feel that I improved tremendously in terms of concreting my values across to the reader. By writing this paper, I seriously feel like i'm more knowledgeable about some of my values
Over the course of this semester I learned a lot about myself as a writer. This English 101 class has really allowed me to expand my essay structure and ways of thinking. This was my first college writing course and it has given me much more freedom when writing because in high school I felt limited and like what we were writing was not very important. In high school I would write essays to just to fulfill the required word or page count and to a degree I still feel like this but maybe that is why I am an engineering major but in this course I actually was able to express my ideas and for the first time really test the limits of my writing capabilities. I really enjoyed being able to incorporate my voice more in my essays and I believe that I developed my own personal style a bit from this. At the beginning of the semester my writing was quite choppy and there was plenty of room for improvement in the overall flow of my essays. Now, I use several different tactics such as outlining to create better connections between paragraphs. I believe I was able to move beyond many of the high school ways of writing and make general improvements to my essays.
“What is a hero….” she thought as she looked to the world, she gripped a green, black and blue fabric, tears falling from her black eyes “fight with honor….” she yelled, her back eyes ablaze with a dark yellow flame, she was enraged, noone could stop her now…”why did you give up soldier...WHY DID YOU STOP THE FIGHT!?...we….i...i loved you...why did you have to die…” she fell to her knees, the dark yellow flame disappearing, now replaced with dark yellow tears, her body racked with sobs and hics “please i don’t know what i did...why..w-why...this is all i have of you now…a mere goddamn scarf...I WANT ALL OF YOU BACK PLEASE!” a light wind blew through the battle field, blowing dust around,a bloody massacre, the battle of humans and monsters took the general’s
Writing papers has been one of my biggest fears as a student. High school English class prepared me for the editing of my essays, for example, grammatical errors, spelling, font errors, and things that were under the category of fixing my paper. I realized that the writing process requires more than just editing, you have to understand that the paper is like a human body, it cannot function if every single part is not effective. I can certainly say that I have improved as a writer a great deal and this portfolio and the final revised drafts of my work certainly can argue for that. English 101 was certainly different from my other English classes; we actually focused on different parts of the writing process in each class instead of wasting our time discussing the same components of the process over and over again. As I reflect on my experiences throughout the semester of English 101 I am aware that I have met very important requirements of writing that I feel were very valuable for me as a student and my writing has improved progressively.
