My First Semester of College
When I first enrolled in this course I thought it would be a good chance for me to meet new people with an interest in ballet, but I never thought that it would have a larger impact on myself. For instance, I did not believe that I would relate the world of ballet to my economics and statistic class that I am currently enrolled in as well, but that is exactly what I began to do. During these past 15 weeks I have learn much about myself, life, and ballet. The class is not what I ever imagined; however I would not change a thing about the class overall. Ballet like everything else has a rich history that although it does not seem important, or appear interesting is key to having an understanding of where it is today and where it might be tomorrow. That is exactly what this course showed every week. It displayed the evolution of ballet and how it is impacting the world that we live in today even though it may not be as popular as it once was.
During the first five week we focused mainly on the Ballet Russe de Monte Carlo, in all honesty I found this to be boring when we were covering the information and the key people during that time period, but now as we are approaching the end of the semester I find myself wishing I had a greater knowledge of Balanchine’s three original “baby ballerinas”. Nevertheless, I did gain a new appreciation for the rich history of the Ballet Russe de Monte Carlo and learned so much information that I never would have without this classes. Overall, from the first five weeks of class if I was to take away one key element, or topic that made the biggest impact in my life it would be George Balanchine. Even though Balanchine appears in ballet no matter what time period ...

...of conversation, it has become apparent to me that ballet is a lot more than what I originally thought it was. I am so thankful that I have come to this realization. Ballet and dance in general is everywhere. From pictures on billboards, to alcoholic beverage commercials, to people celebrating life. Dance is a part of that, has been and will continue to be a part of that. I want to make sure that I do all that I can to spread this reason and love of dance with those who have not yet been exposed to it. I think that is when you found something you are truly passionate about, when you want others to share the same passion you have. I would not have known this about myself if I had not taken this course, if we did not study the Ballet Russe, George Balanchine, the multiple forms of ballet, and how difficult it is to from a business standpoint to be successful.
