Professional Introduction
Presently, I am a Special Education teacher working with children who have a wide range of learning disabilities. My goal is to help students achieve their goals by making the appropriate modification to meet their needs. These needs are not limited, but may include emotional, physical, or cognitive. To start with my interest in this field is because I feel with the proper help and assistance; students are able to achieve anything. Education is essential for everyone. Undoubtedly, the reason why pursuing a PhD is the right decision for me, is because I enjoy what I do, I believe that helping is the key, and more importantly students are in need. At this level, my ultimate goal is to help students that have a learning disability and provide them with the proper resources needed to enhance it. In addition, want to help students to conquer their obstacle and give them the motivation to strive for the best. Introduce students to an education with no limits. In general, I want to have the opportunity to see all my education, hard work, dedication, and motivation in this field, to be well payed off. Admittedly, I want the opportunity to look back at my journey and say “it was all worth it”.

In the end “The Short Bus: A Journey Beyond Norma;”, by Jonathan Mooney was very inspiring, and brought up many different aspects of how the educational system may need to re-examine their approach to those who do suffer from learning disabilities like ADD/ADHD, and Dyslexia. Over the past 10 years, there has been a dramatic increase in the number of students who have been diagnosed with learning disabilities. I need to be aware of how to help those students who have learning disabilities and teach to the best of my ability. I also need to be supportive and understand not every student learns in the same way which is why it is important for me to be flexible in my own style of instruction. I need to be knowledgeable and patient, caring and kind, as I work with all of my students, regardless of ability. Some students are aware of other students who have special accommodations or extra time on tests. One way I will make it easier for students to understand why another student is allowed additional time taking a final would be to explain that being fair does not mean everyone gets exactly the same. Being fair means everyone gets what he or she needs. Since there will be a team of professionals involved with any student who has a disability, I will be working as a team player in the best interest of the child. I look forward to working with a team of personnel such as counselors, parents, special education teachers, medical professionals, social workers, and anyone else involved in supporting the student’s Individual Education Plan (otherwise commonly known as an IEP).
Students with learning disabilities can learn; each student has his or her own strengths and weaknesses. Educators must continue to focus on the strengths of each student and building on them, creating a stronger student and person. Identifying the weakness is at the core of getting a student help with their learning disability, but after this initial identification and placement, the focus should shift to the strengths and adjusting the student’s schoolwork to reflect these strengths. I believe that we all have a purpose on this earth and that everything we go through on the journey there has a reason whether to teach a lesson or set an example. We have places where we want to end up and goals we want to achieve. We set these goals and dreams to help us fulfill the purpose we see for ourselves. The impact of having a learning disability are lifelong. A student with a learning disability may always need extra help to get through certain aspects of life after they graduate high school. If the student is going to college accommodations and specific learning strategies will need to be used to help them through their courses. Their personal lives may also be affected due to a learning disability. “For example, Johnson and Blalock found that, of the 93 adults studied in an LD clinic sample, 36% continued to receive counseling or psychotherapy for low self-esteem, social isolation, anxiety, depression, and frustration.” (1987) The difficulties associated with learning disabilities can affect them daily and their past experiences with it can follow them into adulthood and bring up unhappy memories of struggling with learning disabilities as a child.
In my personal life, my goals are to live a healthier life by exercising and living stress-free. To achieve my academic goals, I will continue to study hard and maintain good time-management. As for my personal goals my plan is to increase my workout time within six months and stop stressing over things I can’t change. Nevertheless, my expected date of completion with my degree in general and special education is the mid-winter year 2020. Upon completion of my degree, I hope to obtain a position as a special education teacher with a class of my own or an inclusion class. I chose this profession because my daughter was diagnosis with autism which motivates me to understand her disorder more and help children like her in a classroom setting. The desire annual salary I want upon acquiring a position as an educator is $45,000-$56,000 a year. The life I currently have will change because it would bring a second income in the home and I would finally have a career that changes community members
Children are the future of our nation and the world. Their footsteps will not only write the history of the nation, but educate us on what needs to change. Therefore, our educational society needs empower children with learning disabilities. Not all children understand the different educational concepts at the same rate. They are children who need additional assistance to comprehend the information present them to them. Although, each child has its distinctive form of learning, the educational system and educators need to construct a new method to instruct children with learning disabilities. This new method needs to provide quality of education to all students, regardless of the abilities and inabilities of the student. The focal point of the system will motivate students to expand their skills. The teaching style will not only be beneficial for students who have a learning disability, but encourage parents and educators to strive for better learning resources on schools.
Education is a profession which requires a teacher to be able to communicate with a multitude of students on a variety of levels. There is not a class, or student for that matter, that is identical. Therefore, teachers must be able to identify and help educate students from all different types of backgrounds and at different levels. Teaching a singular subject presents difficulties, but teaching students with disabilities should not be one. There are three main teaching areas that need to be focused on when teaching a student with a learning disability. Teachers need to focus on the strategies that will assist students with reading comprehension skills, writing skills, and maintaining appropriate behaviors in a classroom setting.

When looking forward seven years I am excited, nervous, and anxious for how my life will turn out. I am a very goal-oriented person so I have a concise plan for how I want the rest of my life to look like. Once I figured out I had a love for English, I quickly decided I wanted to be a teacher. In seven years, I plan on being married and starting a family as I go through the first couple years in my teaching career.
In today's constantly changing world, our children and youth need to learn inquiry-based, problem solving skills to that they may become successful members of society and live productive lives.
