I have often wondered how I happened to make a choice of becoming psychiatrist. All I can figure is that something I read or heard must have convinced me that this would give my life the meaning it seemed to lack or maybe provide with answers I was looking for. I am aware of steps I tool after that to learn more about what was involved in that profession, how I turned an inner conviction and ambition into reality over years, but I never have learned what that initial deciding incident was…..
Being raised by the teacher of Russian literature, I learned all the corners of “mysterious Russian soul” from the classical literature characters with their complexity. My desire to help people brought me to medical school in the first place. As a medical student I also tried myself in other specialties before falling for psychiatry. Psychiatry rotations were fascinating. Many patients were interested both as people and pathology. The challenge behind this specialty is something that provides the greatest fulfillment for me as a future clinician, because when we have reached out and created an alliance with our patients, it touches them in the deepest recesses of their person, far better than any medication or physical intervention can.
Outside of studies, I enjoyed camping with a local club. As a part of a two weeks excavation expedition, I stayed with a group in a tented camp in the mountains. On some days, we spent hours digging for pieces of history. On others, we crawled inside caves or went rafting on the river. The challenging conditions demanded loyalty and trust to perform effectively as a team and to be able to work through stressful situations, which are useful skills for any physician, but especially for psychiatrists.
