What would your life be like without any humor in it? In The Lone Ranger and Tonto Fistfight in Heaven, Sherman Alexie tells stories about the reservation. While reading this book of stories he throws in a lot of things that get you thinking about alcohol on the reservation, where you’d be without parents, and where you’d be without humor. Humor in my perspective is a thing you can fall back on when your day is going all the ways you were hoping it wouldn’t. On the reservation, although it may not be like your type of humor, they use it as a way to clear their heads.
Naturally in Sioux Falls or any other big city if a traffic light didn’t work you could just imagine how many accidents would happen. On the other hand if you were in Humboldt and there was a stop light and it didn’t work I think ti would be safe to say that maybe one every three months would happen, maybe not even that many. “Shit, they better fix it. Might cause an accident.” (pg. 48) On the reservation it is just like being in Humboldt, based on what I comprehended this quote to be saying. This is just the kind of humor people use when you don’t want to be sitting in that awkward silence and just need to talk. Without this type of humor the world would be filled with awkward silences everywhere.
“Sadie,” I said, “Let’s put him on the roller coaster.” (pg. 55) Some people may think that that was a terrible joke to play on a drunk person, but it’s the way Indians like to play jokes. In the chapter Amusements, as Sadie and Victor are getting ready to leave the amusement park they try to decide what needs to be done with Dirty Joe. Not wanting to leave him their they pay the carny to let him ride around and around again. I’d have to giggle at this one...

... likes to take bad news also.
I like to think of humor as an important factor in life. Without it life would be boring and nobody like boring. Sherman Alexie tries to show how humor is used on the reservation. It’s not just the kind of humor where you recognize it just like that. You have to be thinking in a way an Indian does to get the humor they try to put out there. In every story of his I think it is used in somewhat of a different way. Trying to get all the different ways humor can be used into his book. I think he did it wrote The Lone Ranger and Tonto Fistfight in Heaven in a very deep way. I believe he truly tried to explain life on the reservation as best he could, although it was harder for non-Indians to really understand it. You had to really think about it. Next time you think about humor think about ways that other people like to use it.

Humor As A Type Of Social Interaction Essay

- ... But then the Lord God said, “Wait, what if I make it a sort of rosy, sunset-at-the-beach, filtered half-light, so that everything else that I design will look younger?” from Paul Rudnick’s story “Intelligent Design” (Rudnick, Paul. Humor : A Sixth Sense Essay example

- Humor: A Sixth Sense Since I was a baby I was always known as the child with the golden smile. My parents always would say my smile would take me far. People often ask me why I am always so happy and I usually reply with a sarcastic remark like “because I didn 't swallow a doorknob today” or something along those lines; but the real reason is that I have a quality that not everybody has, a sense of humor. Humor has many definitions, but to me it is the ability to perceive and express something that is absurd or incongruous....   [tags: Laughter, Comedy, Humour, Humor]

A Sense of Humor Essay

- Novelist and grocer Evan Kingston states that, “Humour is a tool, like characterization or dialogue, and its foolhardly for any writer to rise to the impossible task of communicating the unspeakable with less than all”. In literature to use humour in a narrative is often justified along the lines of a comedic structure. It is a genre that can be mixed and connected with more than one type of literary work. Dark Humor By Raymond Carver Essay

- Dark humor is a tool prominent in many of Raymond Carver’s stories. One can see dark humor in works such as “Careful”, “A Small Good Thing”, “Whoever was using this bed”, and to some extent “Cathedral”. Nevertheless, dark humor is often used within Carver stories without it becoming the main emphasis, though some of his subject matter remains gloomy. Several stories, however, such as “A Small Good Thing”, and “Whoever was using this bed”, use dark humor as a main feature of the plot. Use of Humor in Erdrich's Tracks Essay

- Use of Humor in Erdrich's Tracks             An old adage claims that laughter is the best medicine to cure human ailments.  Although this treatment might sound somewhat unorthodox, its value as a remedy can be traced back to ancient times when Hypocrites, in his medical treatise, stressed the importance of  “a gay and cheerful mood on the part of the physician and patient fighting disease” (Bakhtin 67).  Aristotle viewed laughter as man’s quintessential privilege:  “Of all living creatures only man is endowed with laughter” (Bakhtin 68).  In the Middle Ages, laughter was an integral part of folk culture.  “Carnival festivities and the comic spectacles and ritual connected with them ha...   [tags: Erdrich Tracks]
