According to Merriam Webster, the definition of human trafficking is “organized criminal activity in which human beings are being treated as possessions to be controlled and exploited.” Human trafficking is a global problem that is happening somewhere in the world as of right now. The government should make an international police agency to combat human trafficking and bring awareness to the horrible events before one can be trafficked. Human trafficking is a major issue around the world and it deserves so much more attention than it is receiving. Human trafficking does not catch the eye of many individuals in small cities or towns as it should. When a person is being trafficked, they are being sold just as slaves were being sold as property, but there are more risks when a person is being trafficked. [Rodriguez says “ human trafficking can lead to rape, abuse, terror and even drugs. If a person is being trafficked, they can go through severe events that would make it difficult for them to recover.”] [According to the Department of Homeland Security, “They are forced into prostitution, involuntary labor and other forms of servitude to repay debt.”] Human trafficking is worse than slavery. [According to Johnson, Captain of the Criminal Investigative Division, “If a minor agrees to be involved with sexual activities while being trafficked, that person is still maintains as a victim because they are being forced against their will.”] If a person is involved in human trafficking, situations like this may occur and even though the minor may agree, they may not have any other choice because the trafficker could threaten them in other ways if they decide to not agree.
