Human Trafficking, or the modern form of slavery, is a subject that evokes strong emotions in many. Some will say it is an urgent human rights issue while others will say it simply does not exist within the United States. Many people do not want to admit that slavery is still happening within a country where it was thought to have been banished many years ago. However, this is something that absolutely happens here. More education needs to happen as well as more awareness needs to be brought on the subject. This is not an issue isolated to under developed nations, but happens in developed nations as well. This problem also leads to oppressions of many people living in poverty. Many citizens as well as immigrants are having their lives stolen from them right here in the backyard of the land of the free.
Human Trafficking is a social problem most correlate with under developed nations, not as one in the United States. Most people are wrong, however, because human trafficking is an issue happening every day in this country. The United States Department of Homeland Security defines human trafficking as “a modern-day form of slavery involving the illegal trade of people for exploitation or commercial gain” (“Definition of human,” 2013). A modern day form of slavery means that there are innocent people in this country having their lives and rights stolen from them in order for others to gain wealth at their expense.
There are two man forms of human trafficking: sex trafficking and labor trafficking. Human trafficking continues to be an issue in not only under developed nations, but in wealthy nations such as the United States as well. In order to help decrease this issue their needs to be an increase in education of the topic. People need to be informed that this is in fact an issue that happens around them. For a country founded on the ideals of freedom it is unacceptable that any form of slavery should still exist today. No person within the borders of this country should live in forced servitude and exploited sexually so the few may prosper. The idea that slavery was abolished many years ago is a myth.

A 32 billion dollar global enterprise annually, its effects are far reaching and highly damaging to all involved. In reality, “human trafficking” is essentially a politically correct term for slavery. There is an endless list of myths and misconceptions in regards to human trafficking, but I plan to keep all the information here very clear and concise. It’s such a problem, because people fail to recognize it, and don’t understand the severity of the crime. Human trafficking is where children, teens, and adults are prostituted for money. Some are forced to have sex. Human trafficking occurs all over the world, but its effect in Nevada is devastating. There have been 2,229 victims of human trafficking that have been saved since 1994.
In 1865 the United States passed the thirteenth amendment of the constitution which formally abolished the practice of slavery in the United States. Over a century has went by since this day, and yet somewhere behind the mask of freedom that our country holds with such pride lingers a hidden trade. Despite the freedoms we are granted as a citizen of the United States,- human trafficking is an enormous issue that is often overlooked. In Prayers of The Stolen, there are plenty of examples in Mexico where women and young children were being taken. Some women who have been taken never return back to see their families. They have known to start trafficking along the U.S. Mexico border. Human trafficking is the modern day slavery, it involves taking control over a person through force, fraud or coercion to exploit the victim for forced labor, sexual exploitation. or both (“What” par.1). This is become the sad reality for many, approximately three out of every 1,000 people worldwide are being forced into this such slavery. Victims of human trafficking are people of all backgrounds and ages, no one is safe from the dirty hands of human traffickers. When the topic of slavery is up for discussion, many individuals think of American history. Human trafficking, or the selling and buying of people, is a well-hidden yet prominent issue within today’s society. It is both an immoral and horrific topic that needs brought to attention and dealt with. When human beings are manipulated into work, sexual servitude, or economic hardship, human trafficking is occurring. In the year of 2006, only one individual is convicted of human trafficking per 800 victims (UNGIFT). By looking at straight statistics, reasons human trafficking happens, and the toll it has on people, it is very clear that this is a major issue that is happening in our world.
Human trafficking is a topic that is not discussed very often in society. Many people fail to realize that human trafficking still exists today. Human trafficking violates basic human rights. It takes away the freedom and security of men, women, and children world wide. The diversity and widespread execution of human trafficking make it difficult to regulate and prosecute.
