Along with the space exploration program another important program that needs to be re-invigorated is the human space flight program. Since the Space Shuttle program was decommissioned in 2011, the U.S. has had to rely on Russia to gain access to space for its human space program. The human space program needs to spark the interest and maintain its relevance with not only current policy makers but the general public as well. Without it, the future of human space travel will be at risk. Additionally, domestic commercial space companies should be encouraged to explore a variety of ways to further develop space tourism.

Part of the reasons on why to try and go to Mars should be to prove that this great nation can once again accomplish great things when putting our best effort towards a goal. In order to achieve this goal, the U.S. can not do it alone. This will need to be a unified effort unlike the national space program has never seen. Utilizing the entire space industry commercial, military, and multi-national support so to accomplish the mission the right way. The financial burden alone of missions like these, will be too great for one country to bear. With the current estimated to run up to six billion dollars for the first mission. As the fiscal environment get figured out, the focus still should be sending robotic probes to the surface as well as to orbit Mars to continually study the planet.
