As time passes by, life gets more challenging for many people out there, in our community. There are those who become disadvantaged such as the handicapped, those who are unemployed, and those who come of age and are in need of special attention. Luckily there are specific organizations which address these needs in the community, like senior care centers or shelters. Also, there are big charities that take in patients with no income, patients that are diagnosed with diseases, and those who suffer from isolation. Many organizations such as Caritas of Austin, Crisis Assistance Ministry, Camphill Village Kimberton Hills, and Homeland Center are charities which assist their communities in times of recession, poverty, and special assistance.
First, Caritas of Austin is a charity that assists millions of women, men, and children who are impoverished. Founded in 1964 by Father Richard McCabe, Caritas began assisting the homeless within the budget of $30,000 funded by Catholic Diocese of Austin. Collaborations from other churches and organizations, including Salvation Army increased. By 1980, staff and volunteers doubled, 100 breakfasts and 300 lunches were being distributed per day, and about 5,000 clients were served annually. Today, Caritas of Austin continues to support the impoverished. (Caritas of Austin) “Caritas serves hot meals every weekday through our Community Kitchen and take-home groceries through our Pantry to individuals and families in need” (Charity Navigator Rating - Caritas of Austin). As a matter of fact, today, this charity provides Housing Services for people who need help maintaining their current home. Other services that have developed through this charity include: Education Services, Employment Services, Food S...

A possible lack of support for bringing up a child alone or Social-economic factors. Another area could be living in an area where people were living below the poverty line. When deciding on which non-profit organization to give resources to, a person must think of a number of questions that need to be answered in which to choose a certain one. The most pertinent of these questions is the one that asks which cause the person cares about the most. The problem, for a majority of the population, is that they just do not know what they truly care about. That is why the United Way is the best option for donations. The United way does not focus on one specific, but instead works for a variety of different causes focused on fixing some of the different problems inside of the United States. The United Way is an organization, which envisions a world where all individuals and families achieve their human potential through education, income stability and healthy lives. It plans to do this by improving lives by mobilizing the caring power of communities around the world to advance the common good. The United Way needs money and time in order to achieve some of these goals. This essay will explain why the United Way is the best organization to give ones resources to.
The Human Service field can be challenging to people at times and rewarding as well in other moments of one’s career. What is the Human Services field exactly? According to the National Organization for Human Services they report that “the field of Human Services is broadly defined, uniquely approaching the goal of meeting human needs through an interdisciplinary knowledge base, focusing on prevention as well as remediation of problems, and maintaining a commitment to improving the overall quality of life of service populations” (NOHS, 2009).
One of the five key principles of care practice is to ‘Support people in having a voice and being heard,’ (K101, Unit 4, p.183). The key principles are linked to the National Occupational Standards for ‘Health and Social Care’. They are a means of establishing and maintaining good care practice. Relationships based on trust and respect should be developed between care receivers and care givers, thus promoting confidence whilst discussing personal matters without fear of reprisal and discrimination.
Most people feel that they should help the needy in some way or another. The problem is how to help them. This problem generally arises when there is a person sitting on the side of the road in battered clothes with a cardboard sign asking for some form of help, almost always in the form of money. Yet something makes the giver uneasy. What will they do with this money? Do they need this money? Will it really help them? The truth of the matter is, it won't. However, there are things that can be done to help the needy. Giving money to a reliable foundation will help the helpless, something that transferring money from a pocket to a man's tin can will never do.

Many people in the U.S. believe poverty is a major issue in other countries but fail to realize that there are high poverty rates at home as well. When looking at poverty there are many age groups that are affected at different levels, and one of the age groups that is dramatically impacted is children under the age of 18. This age group is specifically a sad one due to the fact that they cannot rely on themselves to get out of poverty. This results in many struggles for children and relying on programs and organizations for the help that they need. Although 21.1 percent of kids are ravaged by the struggles of poverty, many organizations are seeking to positively impact this issue through

I interviewed Linda Jo from Community of Hope, a non-profit organization, based out of the St. Johns neighborhood in North Portland. The population that Community of Hope works with is homeless families, specifically single-parent families. The purpose of this paper is to explore what Community of Hope does, Linda Jo’s role and relevant training, and the work she is doing within the community.
During the month of October, my AVID class went on a field trip to the Milpitas food pantry located at 1440 Main Street. This is a facility where those in financial struggles can visit and receive supplies. These are everyday essential products, such as food, clothes, towels, and hygiene items. The volunteers told us that you can provide them with toys or presents for Christmas, so clients give to their children. They also informed us on how we could support them through donations of
One of the oldest organizations who assist those who are homeless is the Salvation Army. “The Salvation Army is not purely a charity but also a Christian church, founded in the U.K. in 1865 on mainline Methodist principles” (Giles, Matt. New York Magazine.) Although the Salvation Army is well known for volunteers placed around town with bells and red kettles, accepting donations from others. “Day-to-day, it runs drug-and-alcohol rehab programs that are free. During emergencies — hurricanes, earthquakes — the group deploys units of its soldiers and volunteers to feed and support victims and also offer counsel and prayer” (Giles, Matt. New York Magazine). The biggest impact that the Salvation Army has on a day-to-day basis is it’s drugs and alcohol
Social work is a multifaceted, ever adapting profession, which has had many purposes and identities through the years. It is imperative for the vocation to constantly evolve alongside the social climate and the new ways in which we identify and treat those who are in need of support. Social workers can be required to take on the role of counsellor, advocate, case-worker, partner, assessor of risk and need, and at times (as the government seeks to push social work further and further towards the health and education sectors) a servant of the state. The profession is dramatically subject to affection by societal change, thus demanding social workers have a duty to be up to date with the latest developments in understanding how and why people get to the point of requiring social work intervention, and how best to prevent and cater for it.
