In the social work practice, social workers should abide by and respect the protocol of their particular organization. The first ethical standard I would like to discuss is that a social worker having cultural competence and social (NASW, 1999). A social worker must possess the knowledge of values, customs, tradition and history just to name a few in order to have success with clients that may identify as something other than their own identity. Working with people can be challenging, but so rewarding all at the same time. As humans, we are certainly not perfect and we are making mistakes daily. Making decisions is one thing that does not come easily to us, and depending on the day you can get multiple different answers to one situation. The NASW Code of Ethics is an extremely helpful tool when we are working with clients and something that does not ever waiver in ethical decision-making. If we are working in the Social work profession, then we must insure we are making the correct decision for everyone who is involved with the client.

If a client was threatening to sue myself and the agency, I would simply provide him with a photocopy of his clinical record. He is the client and has the right to see and be aware of his progress or maybe not progress. There is not a reason that the client should not be able to see their records and just like the book says, social workers should write their notes in anticipation that either the client, a third party or both will be viewing the notes. In addition, standard 1.08 of the NASW code of ethics says that social worker should be able to provide their client with their records. The care value base is divided into 5 elements - The care value base covers - Equality and Diversity - Rights and responsibilities - Confidentiality - Promoting anti Discrimination - Effective communication Equality and Diversity Carers must value diversity themselves before they can effectively care for the different races, religions and differently abled people they will come across in their caring profession.
The Code of Ethics is an important part of a Social Workers career, by giving them basic guidelines, principles, standards, and values/morals for which they should follow. By following these guidelines a Social Worker can keep their work at a professional level and learn to keep work out of a personal level. This Code of Ethics has been set forth by the National Association of Social Workers, and is mandated in the field of practice (NASW, 2008).
A situation from my practicum where I may experience an ethical dilemma is if I needed to visit a patient I knew. If a patient was identified as potentially having social work needs and I knew them personally it may be uncomfortable for them to discuss sensitive issues, especially if I wasn’t aware of the issues prior to reading their medical history. The patient may not be as honest with me because they wouldn’t want an acquaintance to know about sensitive subjects they are experiencing. The agency requires a social worker to visit patients that lack support, are low-income, have a history of substance use, or a mental illness. Visiting these patients is consistent with the social worker’s responsibility to clients.
Social workers may try their best to avoid ethical dilemmas, but the truth is they are faced with ethical dilemmas every day. In case 2.14 a social worker is faced with an ethical dilemma and does not realize the true meaning of her purpose in the situation. Instead of focusing on the child’s fundamental cause for needing her help, she focused on ways to change his sexuality. The social workers' approach of the case was inappropriate and violated several National Association of Social Works (NASW) codes of ethics (The National Association of Social Workers Code of Ethics, 2017).
In the Human Service professional we are bound by a code of ethics, we have a duty to our clients to help them during a crisis. When faced with dilemma’s we can use this code to help in decisions, to distinguish right or wrong, and set a standard on how we should conduct ourselves. It is standard to ensure people that are in a venerable state are treated with dignity, and respect. In this Human Service field we have three Associations that have a code of ethics in place to help us in our profession. Because of the ever changing times and happenings the code of ethics will probably be revised and improved to ensure the welfare and safety of people.
