The potential effectiveness of a team based approach in an organization is clear. However, getting the best outputs in team based approaches is also a challenge due to, for instance, poor team dynamics, lack of team harmony and such. Switching to a team based approach in an organization is, therefore, a decision that requires a lot of planning and analysis before implementation. Ordinarily, a decision to switch to a team based approach should be accompanied by training sessions for the team members to improve their team dynamics, harmony, and align their individual interests with those of the team and the organization in general. For instance, unlike individual-based training, team based training needs assessments to identify interdependencies among team member and determine cognitive skills and knowledge necessary for members to successfully interact as a team (Weiner, Schmitt, & Highhouse, 2012). The training, however, is usually not straight forward and some issues of concern usually arise requiring a calculated approach to training by the training manager. Many agencies, across all sectors, usually have individual based work approaches due the fact that results are due to the personality and determination of individual agents. This, however, does not mean that agencies cannot apply team based structures. Shifting to team based work approaches in agencies is, however, likely to lead to multiple concerns of team integration and motivation of individual members initially used to working alone. These are issues that are likely to flare up during the team training, which is among the first phases in the introduction of team based approaches and a phase in which members are still usually in denial and crisis over the shift. Organizational goals for teams are usually stated in terms of service, quality, innovation, and improved processes. In general, to overcome most of these issues, team based approaches, as Swanepoel (2008) argues, require more effort and resources to be dedicated to, among others, communication and development of shared mindsets about the goals and norms of the team. Additionally, emphasis must be placed on training and retraining in technical skills pertaining work and also in social skills revolving around working and operating as a team. References
The exploration of two models will show an interesting relationship when compared and contrasted. Both can increase competency levels in team building. The models are the Drexler/Sibbet Team Performance model (Human Performance Strategies) and the Four Stage Team Performance model (Developing Management Skills). When they have been used correctly they’ve been shown to improve efficiency and profitability in organizations. “Developing team skills is important because of the tremendous explosion in the use of teams in work organizations over the last decade (Developing Management Skills).” An examination of these models will show the similarities and differences they have in the context of team building.

Developing and improving the team work in my organization is one of my key responsibilities. I work in a military department with about thirty different personnel. Each individual has certain skills, age, rank, and motivation. These attributes can make my department effective or ineffective.
Seven tasks must be included in consideration of team dynamics and structure. The first of which is defining the goal, mission or function of a specific team. The team must know what it is being asked to accomplish. The second area of consideration is assessing what skills, abilities, knowledge or potential to acquire such would be needed amongst selected team members. Identification of potential team members should include an assessment of the skills, knowledge and abilities or the potential to acquire such so that ultimately the team has the building blocks with which to succeed in its mission, goal or function. This assessment must include an understanding of realistic potential contributions by potential team members with the included assessment of whether or not the acquisition of skills and knowledge can be made available through research and analysis.

When we think of the word team, individually many different ideas may come to mind about what a team really is. Some may think of an NFL team (Tennessee Titans), an NBA team (Sacramento Kings), or a NASA astronaut team with such pioneers as Edwin Aldrin, Jr. and Neil Armstrong as members. You might even think of the U.S. Navy, Air Force, Army, Coast Guard, or Marines as teams. In fact they all are, and they have a great deal in common as teams. However, for the purposes of this paper I will examine the characteristics of work teams, as they apply to organizations and I will supply answers to the following questions: What is a team? Where did the team concept come from? What are the types of teams? What are the advantages and disadvantages of having teams in organizations? What does it take to make a team effective?
Organizations use teamwork because it increases productivity. This concept was used in corporations as early as the 1920s, but it has become increasingly important in recent years as employ...
The teamwork is usually defined as the process of working together in a group to achieve a common goal. These days working in groups is inevitable. Whether it is a school assignment or working in a clinical settings, we have to work in groups to accomplish a task. We cannot expect to work in isolation all the times. (Stonehouse, 2011)
Many businesses place an emphasis on the importance of teamwork. A good team consists of people with different skills, abilities and characters. A successful team is able to blend these differences together to enable the organisation to achieve its desired objectives.
Skills and knowledge possessed by every member is also important for a team to become high performance. Although it is among the most important factors, however, it must be coupled with a good working relationship with every team member and good collaboration with every team member. The members who possess the good skills and wide knowledge will be a useful resource to the team if that team member can share their strengths with the other team members and vice versa. It is usually misconstrued that having skillful and intelligent team members is already enough to make a team work right. This kind of thinking is the reason why most teams, despite all of those competent members they have, fail to achieve their goals. A team should establish one common goal, not to think that way and develop a good working relationship with each member. (retrieved from: http://www.strictlysuccess.com, August 18, 2005) This can be done by self awareness exercises, like the DISC assessment and other assessments or any other kind of self awareness exercises regarding communication style differences. Then these factors and important pieces of information should be taken into full consideration before the actual project is begun. These exercise or assessments can be great ice breakers and mark the difference between a group of individuals merely assigned to a team, as opposed to functioning as...
