One of the main functions of the human resources department is to pinpoint, employ and maintain the individuals that the corporation needs to accomplish its strategy and reach its objectives but understand that the human resources function plays a major role within the establishment’s compliance structure also. There are many rules and regulations leading the employment relationship that HR professionals must comprehend and direct in order to help ensure their organizations elude expensive fines and other penalties, including the potential harm to the organization’s status within society. (Carnovali, 2010) In the world of human resource management, the word “compliance” is heard of very frequently and used in every major corporation who cares about the success of their business and the well-being of their employees. Many times, human resource and compliance issues can be overlooked and seem unimportant until a legal situation arises and paperwork is subpoenaed. When a company’s compliance programs are weak, the human resource department is usually the one to blame. (Volkov, 2013)
Human resource workers must familiarize themselves with the various laws that regulate the employer-employee relationship. Some of these laws include the following: The Fair Labor Standards Act which governs the minimum wage and the amount of money paid to a worker for overtime pay; Federal Civil Right laws forbid employers from using race, gender, age or other “protected” status when making firing and hiring decisions or setting the rapports and conditions of employment for an employee. The Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA) provides certain personnel the ability to take up to twelve weeks of unpaid leave each year in specific situations, and to be rees...

The reality was stressed that managers face more civil liability on compliance and ethics which result from a combination of the latest legal and regulatory developments. Throughout the symposium, an emphasis was placed on the executives’ involvement of compliance and ethics. When executives are educated about compliance and ethics, they can inquire about the right things which in turn would keep the other department on their toes by knowing that their top leaders were just as educated on the topics as they were. If HR realizes that their top executives are just as informed, they’ll be less likely to get slacked in the compliance department. (Greenberg, 2010)
