The greatest asset in any company is its people. Each of these prized resources comes from different backgrounds, religions, ages, educational levels and value systems. Because of employee diversity, being a Human Resource Manager within today's business world can be a lot like herding cats. This is especially true of Air Force Human Resource Managers or personnel specialist. The Air Force, unlike many civilian companies, rotates its personnel across the globe on a regular basis. Air Force leadership policies on personnel movements are established to ensure the addition of fresh expertise within an organization in order to maintain a high state of readiness. This places an elevated degree of responsibility on the Human Resource Managers to ensure each member within the unit maintains their focus on working as a team to achieve mission objectives. This paper will discuss a few of the Air Force's Personnel Programs, how these programs work to maintain good order and discipline, and the most significant program for the current stage of my career. The Air Force prides itself on being the most technologically advanced service in the world. Airmen serving today are highly trained and technically skilled. To maintain its worldwide superiority, the Air Force must recruit and retain the best the United States has to offer. To do this, the Air Force invests over $7,900 to recruit a single airman. Once an airman enlists on active duty, the Air Force spends over $35,000 to send them through Basic Military Training. Air Force Human Resource Managers know to attract talent in this demanding profession, they cannot invest in recruiting alone. They must also offer competitive wages and relevant benefits. The Army Human Resource System (AHRS) known as the Electronic Military Personnel Office or (eMILPO) is a web based multi-tiered application. It provides the Army Human Resource Community with a reliable mechanism for performing personnel actions and strength accountability. The System consolidates 43 Personnel Information Systems in one. This system provides visibility of the location, status, and skills of Soldiers in the United States Army. The primary users of this system are Human Resource Soldiers, Commanders, and First Sergeants. The primary features and functions of eMILPO include Personnel Services, Personnel Accounting, Reassignments, Promotions, Readiness, Workflows, System Services, PERSTEMPO, and DTAS.
However, development starts day one with training. Therefore, the Soldiers have to be experts who have assumed the character and identity of the profession; professionalism in Soldiers enables them to perform their duties with lots of motivation and inspiration. For example, 42A - The Human Resources (HR) Sergeant supervises, performs personnel and administrative functions in support of company, battery, and troop; detachments at division, corps, and echelons above corps must master their skill level in an effort to be a subject matter expert in their profession. The functions of Human Resource support four fundamental competencies: Man the Force (ex. Strength reporting), Provide HR Services (ex. Postal operations), Coordinate Personnel Support (ex. Morale, welfare, and Recreation), and Conduct HR Planning and Operations (ex. Planning and operations) in which a HR personnel must accomplish to support the mission. As a result, a professional Soldier should meet very high standards of a profession, for example character, competence, expertise and morality to fulfil their HR role. This paper is factual, and encompasses the humble beginnings of a poor college student and provides insight through to how I am affecting the Air Force mission today. Along the way, you will read about the circumstances that enticed a young man to join the Air Force, training received, a brief description of assignments, accomplishments, positions held, and how I affect the future leaders of the Air Force and its mission.
In this essay I have explained how my background and values led me to a career in the United States Air Force, my most important experiences while serving, and how my job allows me to contribute to the larger Air Force mission. Every year, newly graduated young adults struggle with the idea of what they want to do for the rest of their lives. My journey into the Air Force begins in a similar manner to many fighter pilots my age. It all started with a small movie from 1986, “Top Gun”. As a five year old watching fighters streak across the screen, I was hooked. I realized quickly that the Air Force would be the place that I could pursue that dream. However, while I was still in school, our nation was attacked on September 11th and my motivation was completely changed.
