As the rate of advancements in technology and science continue to grow, ideas that were once viewed as science fiction are now becoming reality. As we collectively advance as a society, ethical dilemmas arise pertaining to scientific advancement, specifically concerning the controversial topic of genetic engineering in humans. Human genetic engineering increasingly causes dissonance between various groups of scientific and religious groups of people in regards to if we should or should not ‘play god’ and attempt to modify humans for the better of the race. First, let’s take a look at what exactly genetic engineering is; according to, yourgenome.org, “Genetic engineering refers to the direct manipulation of DNA to alter an organism’s characteristics (phenotype) in a particular way.” (What Is…). I posit that human genetic engineering will be significantly beneficial to the human race in numerous facets of life as we journey into the future. Genetic engineering in humans should be a part of our future because it will defeat devastating genetic diseases, rid humans of all illnesses in young and unborn children, provide longer lifespans, and provide future generations with a greater quality of life.
Many of the most deadly and incurable diseases are a result of genetic mutations that occur in humans. The human race will continue to suffer from these diseases unless active intervention in the form of genetic engineering takes place. By genetically engineering future generations to be able to be prevented from having to withstand theses deadly genetic mutations will provide a greater quality of life for all who would otherwise be affected.
