“O.N.E.L.E.S.S. I wanna be one less one less.” We have all heard the commercials for being one less girl or guy infected with HPV, but do we really know what the commercials are talking about. What is HPV, or better yet what does it stand for? HPV is the abbreviation for the Human Papillomavirus. It is a very common STD and is easily contracted. An HPV infection can be caused by over one hundred related HPV’s. There are four common types of HPV; they are types six, eleven, sixteen, and eighteen. You might be wondering, what are the symptoms? How can I prevent myself from getting HPV? These are the exact things I am going to inform you of.
There are over one hundred different types of HPV that we can be infected with. The four most common are HPV six, eleven, sixteen, and eighteen. HPV types six and eleven are what cause genital warts. HPV types sixteen and eighteen can be more unpleasant. They cause most cases of cervical cancer.
One major question people ask is, “What are the symptoms of HPV?” The fact of the matter is that HPV often goes undetected with no symptoms at all. However symptoms do vary depending on what type of HPV you have. There may be abnormal growth on certain body parts as a symptom of HPV. Another symptom of HPV can also be genital warts, which are caused by HPV type six and eleven, as well as common warts like planters warts. Lesions on your tongue, tonsils, in your nose, and on your soft palate can all be symptoms of HPV type six, eleven, sixteen, and eighteen. The only other way to detect an HPV infection is through a pap screening. Many people also ask, how is HPV contract? HPV is an STD and is transmitted through skin to skin contact, entering the body though a cut or opening on the outer layer of skin....

In this lab project, the microbiology students were given 2 unknown bacteria in a mixed broth each broth being numbered. The goal of this project is to determine the species of bacteria in the broth. They had to separate and isolate the bacteria from the mixed broth and ran numerous tests to identify the unknown bacteria. The significance of identifying an unknown bacteria is in a clinical setting. Determining the exact bacteria in order to prescribe the right treatment for the patient. This project is significant for a microbiology students because it gives necessary skills to them for future careers relating to clinical and research work.
The purpose of this study is to identify an unknown bacterium from a mixed culture, by conducting different biochemical tests. Bacteria are an integral part of our ecosystem. They can be found anywhere and identifying them becomes crucial to understanding their characteristics and their effects on other living things, especially humans. Biochemical testing helps us identify the microorganism present with great accuracy. The tests used in this experiment are rudimentary but are fundamental starting points for tests used in medical labs and helps students attain a better understanding of how tests are conducted in a real lab setting. The first step in this process is to use gram-staining technique to narrow down the unknown bacteria into one of the two big domains; gram-negative and gram-positive. Once the gram type is identified, biochemical tests are conducted to narrow down the specific bacterial species. These biochemical tests are process of elimination that relies on the bacteria’s ability to breakdown certain kinds of food sources, their respiratory abilities and other biochemical conditions found in nature.

Herpes. Herpes, a word that all of us know, something that gets made fun of by the raunchiest of comedians, a suggestion of a loose life style, a complex virus that was only recently seen as something to be feared since the early 1970’s for a target of money for pharmaceutical companies. Yet as common to be referenced by Shakespeare in Romeo and Juliet, and is a virus that is known worldwide, and almost every one has experienced in one-way or another.
Background: Merck & Co. is an American pharmaceutical company and one of the largest pharmaceutical companies in the world. In 1971 the United States approved the use of an MMR vaccine made by Merck, containing the Jeryl Lynn strain of mumps vaccine. In 1978 Merck introduced the MMR II, using a different strain of the rubella vaccine. In 1997 the FDA required Merck to conduct effectiveness testing of MMRII. Initially it was over 95%; to continue the license; Merck had to convince the FDA that the effectiveness stayed at a similar rate over the years.
There is an ongoing debate concerning if this HPV vaccine should be mandated or remain optional, because it is still undetermined if the vaccine is even necessary. Adams believes the vaccine is not necessary due to alternative preventative measures such as “adequate sunlight exposure and vitamin D consumption, supplementation with probiotics, adequate intake of selenium, and zince, increased consumption of trace minerals and iodine, regular phrysical exercise and many other safe, natural, non-paten...
What is the human papillomavirus (HPV)? According to the US government’s National Cancer Institute, human papillomaviruses (HPVs) are a collection of more than one hundred viruses, many types having the ability to grow tumors or polyps that are malignant and others benign. Certain of the viruses are capable of forming genital warts. The HPVs that cause the common warts on hands and feet are different from those that cause growth in the throat or genital area (Human Papillomavirus). Professors Joe Cummins and Dr. Mae-Wan Ho inform us that some types are associated with cancer, and are called “high risk” HPVs. Of the more than one hundred types of HPVs, over thirty can be passed on through sexual contact. Most HPV infections occur without any symptoms and go away without treatment over the course of a few years. However, HPV infection sometimes persists for many years, with or without causing detectable cell abnormalities. Infection from “High risk” types of HPV is the main cause of cervical cancer. Pap smears have also led to earlier detection of these infections. Nearly all women who are sexually active will have HPV inf...
There are over 100 types of HPV (Human Papilloma Virus). This virus affects the skin and moist membranes that line the body such as the mouth, throat, fingers, nails, cervix, and anus. Between 30 and 40 of the 100 viruses can affect the genital area; for the most part it causes genital warts. Human Papilloma Virus is one of the most common sexually transmitted diseases In the United States, according to various studies it is estimated that at least 50% of sexually active people will get some type of genital Hpv at some time in their lives. People can get Hpv and have the virus for years, even pass it on to their sex partners without even knowing it that is because the virus often does not show any symptoms. It is a sexually transmitted disease that can cause genital warts and cervical cancer”. (“HPV fact sheet” 2012).
Most people know what vaccines are and have received them during our childhood years; but past that knowledge, most people do not think much about vaccines until we have children of our own. Some parents are more skeptical than others on the topic of vaccinations, but most parents choose this preventative measure in protecting their children from harmful diseases. However, in the case of the Human Papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine, there is quite a controversy as to if it is appropriate to administer the vaccine to pre-teen to teenage children. Genital human papillomavirus (HPV) is the most common sexually-transmitted infection in the United States; an estimated 14 million persons are newly infected every year (Satterwhite,
they don’t understand that type-1 herpes starts around the lips and the mouth. This still leaves them at the risk of getting the herpes virus, which leads to type-2 herpes virus also known as genital herpes.
