How To Stop Social Media From Spoiling Your Bright Career
In the present era, people are madly in love with social media platforms including Facebook, Google Plus, Twitter, etc. It is not less than a magic that these platforms allow you to send your thoughts and receive ideas from others over the Internet just with a blink of your eyes. It takes very little time to connect you with your family, acquaintances, friends and even with strangers all across the world. But, this has become simpler to create a social media faux pas and it can also lead to ruining your career.
Bad comments about the company, boss or colleagues
Many a times, we have a strong urge to post some bad comments (via social media) about our company, colleagues or boss. But, we must keep it in mind that these things can provide a momentary thrill as we may have to pay a heavy price for this in future. If you post something wrong about your boss and he sees it, then you may not get fired, but things are not going to be normal for you. Your seniors may think that you are untrustworthy or immature.
Keep yourself away from the controversial posts
You must avoid posting controversial comments about your co-workers or boss as it may leave you isolated. Besides it, this silly step can impact your successful career and even thwart your hard-earned reputation at the workplace. In addition, you should not make any negative comment about religion, politics or any other issue, which may affect your prestige at the office.
Remain careful while posting pictures
It is even worse to post inappropriate images as compared to negative comments. This because the images tend to stay in the mind of the viewer for a longer time. You should think before you post an image, which depicts an inappropriate outfit or an activity, which is not good in the views of your colleagues and boss. You can ask your friends or family before you post an image online that whether it is questionable or not.
Do not fall a victim of social media addiction
This is very important that you must not become a victim of social media addiction. If this happens, then you may find yourself scrolling and posting via social media website at inappropriate times. For instance, if you start uploading content in your office hours, then it may create trouble for you.
Have you ever been confronted by an employer or administrator because they just so happened to come across a post you made on a personal account of yours? A friend of mine almost lost her job because of a situation like this. One day, while she was at work, she posted a tweet saying that she was tired of her job. A couple of days later, she was approached by one of her managers. Her manager acknowledged the tweet and also mentioned that his boss saw it as well. She explained to her manager that it was not her intention to be “insulting”. Her manager strictly explained to her that if he were to be notified about a similar post, she would be fired. I believe that her tweet was a personal thought and that she was only expressing how she felt at the moment. In result of this, employers should not hire or fire employees based on the content of their social media.
In today’s society, the issue of harassment in the work place is a very sensitive topic. There are many ways to harass people even though, the harasser do not realize it. For instance, our book list a few items, which are, consider harassment when directed to a person, “dirty jokes, vulgar slang, nude pictures, swearing, and personal ridicule and insult.” (Bohlander 65) even though, Mr. Villa probably did not meant his comments in a malicious way, as stated in the book making a person feel ridiculous its consider harassment in the work place as well.
Is the use of social media in the workplace counter-productive? Of course it is and here’s why. Reason #1, you can’t be focusing on your work if your nose is in your phone. Reason #2, there are better things you could be doing with that time and your employers aren’t paying you to sit around on your phone, they are paying you to work, to make their business more productive and efficient.
Workplace gossip like this can have devastating consequences. We tend to have a strong negativity bias: almost all of us pay more attention to negative information than we do to positive information. Think about the last time you posted something to Facebook, for example, and got a string of enthusiastic comments followed by a single, stinging rebuke – which comment did you focus on?
Publicly demoralizing or openly mocking subordinates or colleagues. Employees and colleagues feel disrespected and unappreciated when they are publicly called out or mocked. They become the laughing stock in the office. How would you feel if you were on the other side of the mockery?
Any comment you post on Facebook or Twitter can backfire on you. Never ever post any status on facebook or Twitter that may offend your employer. In 2013, a PR exec went under extreme hatred and eventually lost her job for putting an insensitive joke on Twitter.
Everyone is aware of the revolution that social media has created on the way people communicate today; however, social media has also some negative effects on the people.
As commented above offensive email messages sent can be incredibly problematic, but so can that of material sent to other employees within the company.

The consequences of harassment can be very significant on both the employees who have experienced it and the organizations itself. For the employees, results of such an act can lead to less job satisfaction and less organizational commitment, and increased levels of stress. They may also experience tension, anger, and anxiety. Some of them might as well experience depression or guilt or even the need for medical or psychological attention and more intention to quit their job.
First of all, there are several reasons as to why social media has the potential to be extremely addictive to users. Many believe that “as in the case of other types of addiction[s], there are

Effective communication is also a two-way street. While at the same time building stronger workplace relationships for increased productivity. It sounds so simple: say what you mean. But all too often, what we try to communicate gets misconstrued in translation despite our best intentions. We say one thing, the other person hears something else, and misunderstandings, frustration, and conflicts ensue. Fortunately, you can learn how to communicate more clearly and
Many companies have a social media policy which gives guidelines for the appropriate use of all means of communication on the internet, including to your own or someone else’s blog, chat rooms, Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr, Flickr, Instagram, etc. You are entirely responsible for what you post online. Before posting anything online, think about whether it will affect your company or your colleagues. If the company is a subject of the content you are creating, be clear and open about the fact that you are an employee and clarify that your views do not represent those of the company. If your post is seen to be damaging to the company (e.g. you disclose trade secrets such as the development of a new product) or is offensive, disrespectful, malicious or threatening then you may face disciplinary action from your

According to USA TODAY, a Yazino Founder Hussien Chahine said in the telegraph that “Communication is constantly evolving. Some people are used to seeing their friends’ online avatar as they are their face.” But here’s the problem, people are abusing the social media way too much, I mean if it is not on their phone then they are on the computer 24/7 checking to see if anybody responded.
