Ralph Lauren said it well when he said “A leader has the vision and conviction that a dream can be achieved. He inspires the power and energy to get it done.” (Lauren n.d.) Every company needs to have an attitude similar to this. A vision or goal needs to be out there so every leader and employee knows the purpose of the company and ways to bring the vision to fruition or to reach the goals. Let’s take a look at how important it is to have a company vision, to set goals, and how they are important when you are a leader.
Vision
Having a vision is the first step when it comes to goal setting. (Clark 2013) A vision lets you the leader and your employees know why the company exists and where the company wants to be in a few years or more down road. Any successful organization in in the 21st century should have a mission and a vision. When an organization has a foundation and a purpose for existence, they will have the basic qualities of a successful establishment. To follow through with a mission, a vision must be created. A vision is based off of a company’s purpose for existence and formation of long-term goals. Without goals, an organization has nothing to work for and no reason to become successful. While working at Safeway, I was aware of the mission of the company and the vision that the company had.
Andy Stanley begins with the origin of a vision. Stanley (1999) contends, “Visions are born in the soul of a man or woman who is consumed with the tension between what is and what could be” (p. 17). According to Stanley, a vision is the ability to see what is possible in light of the present reality. A leader will not a have a vision for an organization if he is content with the status quo. Conversely, it is out of discontent that a vision is birth within a leader’s heart.
Answer: “Visions seen only by the leader” (Kouzes & Posner, 2013, p.100). This is a very common obstacle that is both valid and can be overcome. It’s valid because leadership drives vision and purpose. If the leader has not expressed a vision that all can understand or support, the organization will not be successful. This obstacle can be overcome by other leaders within the unit having the courage to identify this failure and address it.
Frequently communicating the vision to members of the organization should be done often and thoughtfully. A company’s leadership team should develop strategies for achieving the vision. One way to communicate the vision is to discuss it daily, and include it as a part of your decision making and problem solving process. Managers should demonstrate the change manifested by the organization, so employees recognize this kind of behavior is present. Communicating the organization’s vision can also address any concerns or difficulties openly and honestly. Setting clear goals and objectives plays a vital role to achieve the targeted goals. So, all the team members should be aware of the clear goals and the expectation so that they can put all their effort and achieve the success.
Having and transmitting a successful "shared vision" requires true "buy-in" on the part of the employees and the organization as a whole, and must foster genuine commitment and active enrollment in order to bring that organizational vision to a personal level. For shared vision to become a product of personal vision, each individual must "feel it", and be able to see how this vision can be articulated to promote the long-term interests of the company's success, and position in the larger scheme of things. This road to the end result is usually not mapped out or even guaranteed, and the creative tension this inspires, through personal commitment and dedication, is the fire it produces form it's visionary fuel.

A leader will know what direction they want their organization to go. They will have clearly communicated their vision to their followers. In order to achieve successful results for their vision an effective leader will have a well organized, detailed plan delegating important tasks to the appropriate people who will assist in achieving the vision.
Setting goals in both the long and short term ensures a consistency towards work outcomes. It creates a shared understanding of the commitment and responsibility necessary to move project or workplace forward. With a solid strategic plan a work team and their manager can be oriented to make tough decisions and choices for 'the end result '. When a plan can be made available to employees it creates a conversation around 'buy in ' and can enthuse and energise all involved. When a plan is conceived you can be assured that over time there is a continuing integrity to the overarching vision that is built into the process.The setting of goals maximises performance by providing measures and time lines that can be checked against, over time it can become clear where more or less time can be allocated. Goals contain powerful ethics to guide practice.
The best leaders address the connection between people, strategy, and results in an organization by communicating the significance of the company’s work in a way that people understand the value of their work and how important their work performance is to the success of the company. When leaders clearly communicate a shared vision to everyone of an organization, they elevate the human spirit. People want to make a difference and know that the time they spent here on earth had a purpose.
To be successful, a leader must have vision and passion towards achieving their goals. Writing a vision is an essential part of making a plan. The vision must be inspiring and be a set framework for being a successful leader. Some of these goals are personal while others are professional. My professional goals in life are to find a good job that makes me happy, get a good education, find a job that makes enough money for me to support my family, and help people.
