How to Accept and Comprehend Students

In today’s schools, we see a variety of languages, cultures, identities, and personalities in our students. Many of our students are bicultural and bilingual. They spend a majority of their time learning about their culture and their classmates’ cultures. As educators, we need to learn how to accept and comprehend our students in order to help them succeed. Being able to become knowledgeable on child development and detect the students’ ability and knowledge as learners will be useable on constructing differential instruction. In the classroom, teachers need to be able to response to diverse learners and teach an individual on an appropriate educational level. By continuing my studies with the SMU Masters’ Program, I will be able to prepare for my teaching profession. I will like to become a successful professional educator who is able to instruct and use effective instructional strategies in the classroom.
My belief in education is every student has the ability to learn. As teachers, we must never give up on our students. Some ways of improving student achievement are increasing rigor in the instructions and assignments and setting high expectations for the students. In addition, students need to be taught how to self-regulate their knowledge, set their own educational goals, develop strategies to meet their goals, and reflect on their academic performance. For example, having assessment-centered classrooms allow teachers know if their instructions are successful with their students. It also helps students know where they stand in their academic performance.

... some students will be able to capture the instructions and lessons faster than others. However, a teacher needs to provide more than one plan just in case one lesson doesn’t go as plan. Planning is essential for a teacher. A teacher needs to be preparing for the unexpected all the time. Having backup lessons and instructions can be helpful for those students who couldn’t comprehend in the first time. Teachers can differentiate on the content, the process, and the product of a lesson. For example, a teacher can differentiate the content of a reading assignment by providing technology like an audio book or computer reading game. The teacher can also change the process by changing the activities from an interactive activity to student centers. The same can happen with the product of the assignments. The teacher can encourage independent or small group assignments.
