The effects that can occur are based on whether the drug is an agonist or an antagonist. Agonists work by chemically imitating the neurotransmitter as it connects to the receptor, therefore strengthening its effects (OpenStax, 2016). One type of drug that has the characteristics of an agonist is a depressant. All depressants affect the gamma-Aminobutyric acid neurotransmitter system (OpenStax, 2016). Because the gamma-aminobutyric acid suppresses the brain, depressants also suppress the brain because they act as an agonist by mimicking the neurotransmitter. Those who continuously take depressants become dependent and therefore addicted to the drug due to its ability to increasingly calm the nerves of an individual. The incorrect attachment of the neurotransmitter to the receptor has an effect on the behavior of an individual. As this incorrect bond continuously occurs, it disrupts several other functions of not just the nervous system, but the many other systems that make up the human body. The more systems that stop working correctly, the higher risk a person has for health issues and death. Although one may enjoy the feeling that goes along with using drugs, it is not worth the potentially life-changing effects that drugs have on the body.
