It’s amazing how different cultures can be. In some places, they have cats and dogs as pets, but it others, those animals are used as food. But it’s not food that is influenced by the culture around us, it also changes a lot with how people behave. In some countries, certain things are not aloud, but in others it is. An example of this would be drugs. Some countries will allow citizens to own marijuana when other refuse to let it in their boundaries. Because the laws and government in each country are different, people behave differently than they would in other places where such behaviour is out of the question. Because of how much setting changes people and how they act, it is very important in stories to have a strong setting. There are two stories of which the setting is very important, The Man to Send Rain Clouds and Old man of the Temple. The setting in The Man to Send Rain Clouds and Old man of the Temple influence the characters and story events in three different ways: (1) it influences how the characters react to certain types of events, (2) it influences how the story prog...
Other species. Different people. Different others. Something that I almost missed while reading this book was the theme of diversity. Diversity in looks, thoughts, and mainly opinions. The Taker and Leaver culture was presented to guide humans to the right way, yet it did much more than that. The two different cultures were brought out because they were basically different. If I were to press the button and go back to pre revolutionary times, would I ever have met man when he wasn’t in control? The Taker culture wouldn’t have existed and I wouldn’t have a button to press. These different perspectives of how to live are defined by the laws of nature. For example, in chapter 10, when the narrator was explaining the myths of his people, he got onto the topic of Hammurabi’s laws. “And Hammurabi says, ‘Laws are things that tell you the one right way to live” (Quinn
The setting in this story is significant because, the whole story is about how a young black boy is treated unfairly and sentenced to death because of something he did not do. It also deals with the emotions that this black boy faces because he has been treated unfairly by the white people.
Setting has always been the number one thing to focus on in all stories beside characters and plot development. Yet, setting has a huge part in both of those things as well. Setting has such a wide variety of things writers could choose from which is why the reason so many people focus on it is. Every little detail read describes the setting or puts a vivid image in the reader’s mind which is really the main focus of writing. If the readers have nothing to picture, then there is no story or point in reading that certain text. In the texts of The Man to Send Rain Clouds and Old Man of the Temple, there are many similarities and differences that influence the character and story events through place, time, and culture.
“It’s pretty, isn't it, old sport?”(Fitzgerald 53), hollow words that describe an era precisely. The Great Gatsby is a wonderfully depressing novel about a man who literally made a name for himself and died in search of the American Dream. It was set in the Roaring Twenties, also known as the Jazz Age, a time about dynamic subcultures all around the world, and their grand art, social lives and music. This book is set by F. Scott Fitzgerald in the North East of the United States, New York, and Long Island known as West and East Egg. Setting is very crucial element in any novel. F. Scott Fitzgerald uses the setting of The Great Gatsby in a very graceful manner. In The Great Gatsby, Fitzgerald utilizes setting such as “The Valley of Ashes,” Gatsby's grand mansion, West and East Egg. Fitzgerald uses these settings to express, symbolize and represent the current state of society and help the reader peer into the soul of the great Gatsby. His motivation to do this is to show the flawed and misconceived connotations of society's morality at this time.
does this by using the themes of the story to show the tendencies of modern culture. In
However, both of the novels express those subjects living by values beyond the social norms as having some power to change societal norms. By examining Turk’s theory of conflict between authorities and subjects, it becomes apparent the deviant behaviour observed from the characters in both novels is an influencing method of power to alter cultural and societal norms.
"A Pair of Tickets" and "Everything That Rises Must Converge" are good examples of how setting explores place, heritage, and ethnic identity to give us a better understanding of the characters. In "A Pair of Tickets" Jing-Mei Woo discovers for herself what makes her Chinese and the setting played an important role in helping us understand how she came to this discovery. The setting in "Everything That Rises Must Converge" gave us a good understanding of why the characters acted as they did to the situations presented. The setting in both of these stories greatly contributed to the understanding the characters better and in general the whole story.
...found experiences and feelings that the reader can somewhat relate to. The narrator was changed from only seeing herself as an American and only seeing herself and her mother’s daughter to being Chinese and being a part of her mother. Setting can create: a better understanding of the characters experiences, the challenges they’ve had to work through, and the longevity of their being. Without the proper use of setting one can only assume that any story could be only dialogue followed by the feeling of being stuck in a blank room with nothing more than the characters. Therefore, setting should never be overlooked or thought as less equal to any other storytelling element.
However, the setting of a story is more than simply a where or when that makes a nice background to a story. In a story, the psychological setting or cultural definition of a scene are associated with the values,
In conclusion, this book gave me a whole new view on life and how we can interact better with different people. The book emphasized that culture is key to understanding people. Sometimes it is hard to connect with others because they are indicated as different but in due time we can adjust. Every culture has their own traditions when it comes to what they eat, what to wear, dating, various ceremonies, holidays and more. Reading this book helped me become more accepting of who I am and where I come from.
The setting of a story is the physical and social context in which the action of a story occurs.(Meyer 1635) The setting can also set the mood of the story, which will help readers to get a better idea pf what is happening. The major elements of the setting are the time, place, and social environment that frame the characters. (Meyer 1635) "Trifles by Susan Glaspell portrays a gloomy, dark, and lonely setting. Glaspell uses symbolic objects to help the audience get a better understanding for the characters. The three symbolizes used are a birdcage, a bird, and rope.
Second, what is the mood of this story trying to portray with the setting. The setting c...
Literary elements are demonstrated throughout the story and further improve our understanding of the central idea. The setting is important to the central idea because it shows the reader the type of society being described in the story. The language is also important to the central idea because it contains metaphors which further prove that the people are afraid of going against tradition because they are scared of being the target of violence. The conflict contributes to the central idea as well, because there are many examples of the society going against character, Mrs. Hutchinson, for not respecting the traditions put in place. The central idea is important to our understanding of the story because it sums up the main objective and furthers our
Everyone has a special place that people will never forget. Sometimes it is because there were places that people experienced great joy or comfort. A special place represents peoples’ special memories either good or bad. Memory will following people whole life, and store people’s heart deeper. Good memory will coming all time. My special place and my memory is my grandparent’s house; my grandparent’s house practically is my second home. I would never forget that special place because of things going on my grandparent’s house, which is symbolized by my grandparent’s love.
I think we all have a beautiful place in our mind. I have a wonderful place that made me happy a lot of times, years ago. But sometimes I think that I am the only person who likes this place and I'm asking myself if this place will be as beautiful as I thought when I will go back to visit it again. Perhaps I made it beautiful in my mind.
