Literature Review An article (Yoo, Gee, & Takeuchi, 2009) discusses how the prejudice and discrimination based on the language are associated with the chronic health condition based on the stress and the length of stay in the U.S. The authors measure the data of the immigrations about how the immigrants had some discrimination which led to some problems in their bodies. The authors indicate that the mental conditions are easily influenced by the language discrimination; however, the physical condition of the immigrants is influenced by the length of stay in the U.S. It is because, according to Yoo et al., longer duration in the U.S has more association with chronic health conditions than shorter duration in the U.S. (Yoo et al., 2009, pp. …show more content…

The authors indicate that the race is one of the targets of discrimination so English as a second language (ESL) people are sometimes discriminated, such as the reject from job opportunity. Moreover, the authors write that international students are also given some prejudices and discriminations that Asian immigrants experienced because, according to them, approximately 70% of the international students experienced and knew someone who experienced discrimination. According to Wated and Sanchez, the Mexican accent is sometimes treated as being uncultured, which means that even the accent of the English language becomes one of the targets of the stereotype, prejudice, and discrimination. It is because the accent is different for each country and group similar to the difference of language. Moreover, discrimination based on an accent creates other problems in the workplace because stress is felt for both foreign speakers and other workers. Therefore, the difference of an accent is negatively associated with the employees’ outcomes and positively associated with the source of stress. They indicate that the manager must make strategies to reduce discrimination and problems because of low job satisfaction and increased work tension. These situations encourage employees quit the job, and a low quality of the employee outcomes and work environment. Moreover, these situations become the cause of mental disorders, which lead to quiting the company and to committing suicide (Wated & Sanchez, 2006, pp. 329-341). Therefore, I think not only language skills, but also the accent becomes the cause of perceived language
