Health care organizations are in a continual state of change so they can adapt and grow. Effective nurse leaders must be well equipped to handle the complexities of change, and be prepared to deal with resistance to change. According to Marquis and Huston (2015), change is a complicated process that requires planning, and it takes time to be able to recognize, address, and overcome resistance. Resistance to change can vary, but nurse leaders need to be empowered to buffer the negative effects of resistance (Montani, Courcy, Giorgi, & Boilard, 2015). The purpose of this paper is to discuss the importance of change and the how the effective nurse leader confronts and deals with resistance to change.
Leading Change to Achieve Success
Interprofessional collaboration is key to achieving success across education, leadership and practice, and to support quality and innovative health care practices and delivery across diverse populations. As the delivery of care becomes more complex and the need to coordinate care among physicians, nurses, pharmacists, social workers, and others becomes ever more important, the development of a well-functioning team becomes a critical objective throughout the health care organization. Leading a change initiative is one of the most difficult tasks a leader can face. It has risks and opportunities and for most leaders managing a change initiative is a crucial role, but the responsibilities can widely vary depending on the change.

Organizations are preserved by change and constant renewal; otherwise, they will stagnate and die (Marquis & Huston, 2015). Leading change can be one of the most challenging tasks for a leader. Many times attempts at change fail because the person trying to implement the change was ill prepared to deal with resistance and used an unstructured approach (Mitchell, 2013). Nurses and especially nurse leaders must develop their skills and knowledge in planned change so they can prepare and convince stakeholders of the necessary changes.
