How Television Is Holding Up Today

Television is a medium that will always be relevant in society. There are thousands of television shows that are produced every year in the United States alone that are watched by millions of viewers. While there are hundreds of low quality shows on air daily, there are always better ones to balance them out. Even within the same network there can be shows that fall on opposite ends of the rating spectrum. However, their devoted fans keep them going season after season. I could be considered such a fan of many of the shows currently airing on the major networks.
From going to watching hardly any television up until a couple of years ago, I must confess that I now watch too much television. While I started watching more when my sisters left for college and I was an only child in the eighth grade, I started watching even more when my family finally got fast Internet my sophomore year. Now I could watch shows that aired at the same time on television later online. Almost overnight, my list of watched shows practically doubled when I discovered Hulu.com. Junior and senior years I almost only watched shows online when I suddenly had hours of homework to do every evening.
Now that I am at college and do not have my own television in my room, I watch everything online when I can find the hours to waste. I watch many shows, but most of them are sitcoms so I actually do not have much variety when it comes to what I stay caught up with. On Fox, I watch New Girl, The Mindy Project, and the new show Brooklyn Nine-Nine. Glee used to be the show that I would drop everything to catch when it was airing, but after the third season, I started slowly giving up on it. Now, I am fine with always being a week behind and watching it online. Cory Mon...

While I feel that the order of the episodes in which they have references to Doyle’s stories is not the best planned out, Elementary is an intriguing idea that I find approval with and it is the only show that I make the time to watch while it is airing since I have been in college.
While it is considered to be the golden age of television dramas right now, I feel that the same can be said for the major networks and their comedies. There are great new ideas consistently being pumped out every season for both new shows and to keep the older shows relevant. There is a certain formula to what makes a sitcom great and with a few different characteristics here and there, the format can be made virtually immortal. Now is the time of television and the networks need to continue to ride the wave of momentum that they are creating.
