In one’s lifetime, he or she will see the world change; right now, the world is constantly changing due to advancements in technology. Older generations feel that by the time they learn and understand one type of technology, a newer, better model comes out. The newer generations, Millennials and Boomlets, are constantly adapting and learning with the new technology. This fast changing technology will change the way that they attain jobs and how they will work in the workforce. Because of this change in technology affecting the entire world, it is affecting the education system as well. Students have seen technology implemented into the classroom with smart boards, calculators that can solve any problem, tablets, and computers. Still, the education system is not implementing enough technology or artificial intelligence (AI) to keep up with the changing world. Artificial intelligence, as defined by Merriam-Webster’s Dictionary, is “a branch of computer science dealing with the simulation of intelligent behavior in computers and the capability of a machine to imitate intelligent human behavior” (“Artificial” par. 1). The education system needs to adapt faster to prepare the next generation of working adults for the increase in AI in the workforce by implementing AI into the classroom.
A traditional classroom setting has remained basically unchanged for years. A teacher stands at the front of the room and lectures about a given subject. The teacher reads, studies, and then presents the material to his or her class. The students have a textbook and take notes. Each day the students had a video lecture to watch, an article to read, a digital lab activity to work through, and a short quiz to take. Through the increase in technology in the classroom, the students are able to learn the concepts in several ways and simultaneously learning how to apply that knowledge.
The future job markets look quite different from now, because of the increase in technology. If the education system is to prepare the next generation of workers and educators to work, then a change needs to occur in what and how information is being taught as well as incorporate more technology in the classroom. The classroom needs a drastic change because it has remained mostly unchanged for years. Just as technology is always changing and progressing so does the education system.
