The Mask Has technology changed the way we make friends? Today’s society is known as the Informational age, and this is because technology has allowed the people to grasp onto certain information with a push of a button. However, it’s not only information that people are grasping on to, but it is also friendships. Friendships and acquaintanceships in the past were made by communicating in person; however, technology has interfered with our communication skills. The concept of “friend” in today’s social networking world is considered deleterious based on the elements such as cyberbullying, antisocial behaviors, and hyper-connectivity of technology. Phones, tablets, and computers have disconnected our formal ways of communication in a way in which neither persons are present in the same room. What we call “social” media; in fact, is not social at all. Like Almeida says, “Facebook is the center for shameless self-promotion.” Any form of social media is a center for shameless self-promotion; in fact, it makes anyone look better. Because of this, the people using the social media are probably getting positive feedback online, so when that person goes out into the real world he/she wouldn’t socialize due to all the feedback they are receiving online. They feel like they are wanted online, but in real life they don’t feel wanted; thus, they begin picking up antisocial behaviors. Almeida also states, “Image is everything.” In the world of technology image is everything; in fact, most people online who post pictures of themselves look so much better in the picture than in real life. Filters and camera quality of the devices are making others look as if they are not their own selves, so when they go outside into the real world, or have been kidnapped, how are the people going to be able to find the person if the picture shows that the individual is utterly unrecognizable. People who are constantly using their phones and gadgets to access social media are losing their human instinct to interconnect with the outside world. Almeida states, “The universal concern over social standings put many unnecessary distortions on interactions and outings.” Mostly everyone in this generation uses technology since it is an everlasting advancing civilization, in technology that is; furthermore, it is making our civilization rely more on technology rather than relying on others or own well-being. Almeida says, “Again, almost nobody, myself included, is exempt from this group that uses social media.” The populace of the world uses technology and these so-called friendships people have online are not really friendships. People are communicating, but are not really gaining an acquaintance because no one knows who that person really is behind the mask. Almeida also states, “seldom exist in actuality.” Due to hyper-connectivity, the human civilization that highly revolved around communication and acquaintances, are no longer forming friendships the way previous generations have done.
