Wake up, check your phone. Leaving for school, grab your laptop. Come home from school, do homework on your desktop computer. Getting ready to unwind, grab your iPad. Before going to sleep, check your phone. This has become an accustomed routine for a generation so technology driven. We often look at others who don’t own a phone as if they’re a foreign species followed by the words, “how do you go about your day without it?” Society depends on technology products to be able to go on about our day normally. Statistics state that 90% of adults in 2014 owned phones, and that doesn’t even begin to scratch the surface on the amount of people that own other types of technology such as computers, tablets, laptops, etc. Technology has greatly evolved over the past twenty years and a percentage of it has been beneficial for medical studies, conservation of energy, and time efficiency in some cases. Although many take advantage of these advances and begin to lose touch with the physical world around us. This is where technology becomes more dominant and “humans [become] the reproductive organs of technology” as said in Kevin Kelly’s book, What Technology Wants. Technology is used in vast amount everywhere we step into and we as humans highly depend on it for communication, school system, and in order to run a business smoothly and effectively.
Communication has lost its face-to-face touch and been replaced by the simple swipe and press of a finger. Step into a mall and visualize everyone in the same room as you. Fifty percent or even more will be talking through the phone, texting a loved one, or using the free Wi-Fi at Starbucks to help browse through their Instagram feed quicker. She proposed for many to turn off your phone, computer, laptop, television, etc., and go out into the world and live your day without these “essentials”. This method worked for her and gave her a huge view of the things she missed out on every day because of technology. This innovation truly is a great thing but shouldn’t be taken advantage of. It is important to be mindful of the time spent on technology or else we’ll soon need to depend on it to actually live. Technology for communication, school studies, and the work place is profitable in most cases when used correctly and efficiently. Society depends on technology for a large variety of things and knowing how and when to use it, is when it is the most resourceful.
